"This port is completely chaotic.
You are advised to be at the port 2 hours before departure. There is no clear guidance where to get your boarding passes and no clear signs where to go, what to do etc.
When you drive to the checkin with your camper, everything seems to work until you’re asked „for the little paper by the police“ and now the journey starts: driving back to the entrance, asking police for a little paper, waiting than being accompanied by a police car to the „scanner“, where the custom scan takes place (this is approx. 2 km away from the checkin), again waiting, driving back, and finally parking on the ferry.
All in all, these processes are not well organized.
We should have left Durrës port at 22:00, due to these processes we started with 3.5 hrs delay at 01:30 in the night."

"I was unable to find clear instructions as what to expect, even on the GNV webpage, so I promised myself I'd document my trip for people who come after me.
I am an EU citizen travelling by car from Durres to Bari, with a GNV ferry. Here was my process:
Step 1, take my GNV booking documentation to the Durres Port building and show it at the GNV desk to receive tickets. The desk opened 4 hours before booking departure, at 18:00 in my case.
Step 2, wait for the security checkpoint to open, it's the gated entry just outside the Durres Port building. It opened at 19:00. It's possible to just wait at the Durres Port parking.
Step 3, drive into the security checkpoint and present your ticket+passport, you will be guided where to drive and wait. Expect beggars to come knocking on your door, mothers carrying kids, kids themselves. This happens even inside the gated area, past where guards are posted, which is a bit strange to me, but well..
Step 4, later in the security checkpoint you'll present your passport+car papers. They may ask you some questions, and possibly flag you for further search. Bonus tip, you're probably more likely to get flagged for a security search if you're early than if you're one of the last cars..
Step 5, optional bonus security search, you get taken to a separate area, unload your vehicle and open all luggage to be searched. You then get guided to a separate area to have your car x-rayed, then you get taken back and can load up all your stuff again.
Step 6, you drive on board the ferry and park. Once you get into the ferry you'll hand a ticket over to the uniformed attendant waiting in the stairwells and they'll get you your cabin key, if you booked one.
Most of the security people didn't speak a lot of English, but they did try to speak Italian with me. They were friendly and helpful, and I didn't have any issues with people expecting bribes or anything like that. Just avoid the beggars and the people hanging around pretending to be officials to take advantage of naive tourists and you'll be in and out at just the cost of the ferry ticket.
