The La Plata municipal cemetery was opened in 1886 to serve as the necropolis for the new capital of the Province of Buenos Aires. It was designed by engineer Pedro Benoit, who also designed several of the city's public buildings.
It is located at the intersection of 31st and 72nd Avenues, and Diagonal 74, at the southern corner of the city center.
The founding center currently houses more than 10,700 vaults, in addition to more than 2,000 graves in the Israelite Cemetery annex, located on 72nd Avenue. In addition to communal and family vaults, the cemetery has niches in the perimeter walls and in the Pantheon. The remains of thousands more are housed in the general ossuary. Among the organizations that have communal vaults are the Naval Pantheon; the Teachers' Association; the Journalists' Circle; the Police Mutual Aid Society; the Penitentiary Service; the Army Personnel Association; and the Protectorate of the Most Holy Mary. There are also niche pantheons belonging to the Curia of La Plata, known as the Clergy Pantheons."
