"Reserva Natural Estancia San Lorenzo is a stunning spot near Puerto Madryn, famous for its Magellanic penguin colony. Walking among thousands of penguins in their natural habitat is unforgettable, and the guided tours provide fascinating insights without disturbing the wildlife. "Delicious lamb served on a sizzling coal platter with a free refill! House wine was great and the flan was amazing.
Hundreds of penguins everywhere you looked in their nests, an incredible experience.
Only negative is that sheep are still permitted to graze on the nesting sites reducing the foliage available for the nesting penguins. Would like to see better protection of the penguin habitats."

"A lifetime peak experience. This is a colony of six hundred thousand penguins, with trails for humans to walk among them - you can literally be inches away (just don't touch!). Our guide, Sebastien, was masterful, leading a small group of four for about two hours of slow paced, flat land walk. He provided extensive details, in English and Spanish, about penguin behavior, life cycle, and the ongoing threats from environmental destruction due to deregulation leading to increased fishing and a planned nearby oil facility. Someone get this guy a TV show! This colony may not exist much longer because of those threats. This was an absolutely exceptional experience. I recommend it to anyone.
The cost was about $60 USD/70000 ARS per person, in addition to the punta Valdes entrance fee. Call ahead to confirm tour times - it was 2pm-4pm the day we visited. This reserve is about 90 minutes drive on gravel roads from the Valdes entrance - our little Citroen did just fine. Be careful to watch the road signs, you might miss the turn off to this reserve and end up at punta Norte, which is nice enough but does not have any penguins. There is a cafe on site with sandwiches, charcuterie, and beer and wine. We went on Christmas day, and there was very little crowd."
