Platypus House. It was so cool to get up close to these unique native animals. We learn that the platypus and echidna are considered monotremes. The only two mammal species that lay eggs, rather than give birth to live young. Also, platypus is one of the few living mammals to produce venom, and echidna spines are actually soft. . . . #platypus #echina #platypushouse #platypushousetas #beautypoint...

We’ve been travelling 20 months now all around Australia and one of our missions was to see Aussie animals out of captivity. Unfortunately, we’ve not seen any Platypus so we bit the bullet and went to the Platypus house in Beauty Point. These guys were all rescued and not suitable for release. Also loved the echidnas (we have seen these in the wild in Inverloch). A very informative session. We ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Platypus House for its educational and engaging tours, highlighting the knowledgeable and friendly staff. The close encounters with platypus and echidnas are a major draw, offering a unique glimpse into Australia's native wildlife. While the platypus can be fast, the overall experience is described as wonderful, delightful, and memorable.

"The staff were so accommodating and knowledgeable, my mother (84 yrs young hard of hearing) joined my wife and I and she found our tour guide to be very well spoken and clear and easy to understand. The Platypus's or is that Platypies were great and to see them up close eating swimming etc was great. But next was the icing on the cake, bring on the echidnas they were so cute and great to watch and find out so much about them.
I'm so disappointed in myself for not remembering our tour guide's name she was absolutely fantastic, she mentioned she had been there for 6 years."

Raph Claverie

"We enjoyed the tour. It was informative, and the platypus is amazing. The echidnas are roaming free in their enclosure, so they wander around your feet , no touching with you hands, though ! There is a special separate tour , a meet and greet where you can feed the echidnas. No touching, but they do climb on you to get to the food on your gloved hands ."

Wendy Harper

"Absolutely superb opportunity to get close & personal with our most unique wildlife. Well worth the (very picturesque) drive from Launceston to Beauty Point, the team at Platypus House have created something really special, an exciting educational experience with Platypus & Echidnas in recreations of their natural habitats.

Our guide Macy was just excellent, it was clear she had a deep love of these magical monotremes and happily answered every question we had during and after she'd completed her descriptions & explanations of the womderful creatures.

All the other staff we met were friendly & professional too. Possibly the only time in your life you can have a gorgeous, curious & playful echidna run around, in between and over your feet. Just magic.

Thank you Macy and all The Platypus House crew for a truly memorable experience."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Monotremes: Platypus & Echidnas

Platypus House is a sanctuary for two of the world's most unique mammals: the platypus and the echidna. Both are monotremes, meaning they are mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. This is a rare trait shared by only five species globally. Visitors get an incredible opportunity to learn about their evolutionary history and distinct adaptations. Instagram

The platypus is semi-aquatic, with a duck-like bill, webbed feet, and a beaver-like tail. They are masters of their underwater environment, using their sensitive bills to detect prey. At Platypus House, you can observe their playful antics as they dive, swim, and forage. The facility emphasizes the importance of conservation for these vulnerable creatures. TikTok

Echidnas, on the other hand, are terrestrial and covered in sharp spines. They are known for their long snouts and powerful claws, used for digging and finding insects. The echidnas at Platypus House often roam freely in their enclosure, allowing for surprisingly close encounters. Learning about their diet and defense mechanisms provides a fascinating contrast to the platypus. Reddit

The Role of Platypus House in Conservation

Platypus House plays a vital role in the conservation and rehabilitation of native Australian wildlife, particularly monotremes. Many of the animals housed here are rescued individuals that are not suitable for release back into the wild due to injury or other factors. By providing a safe haven and expert care, the facility ensures these animals can live fulfilling lives while educating the public about their importance. Instagram

The educational aspect of Platypus House is paramount. Through guided tours and interactive experiences, visitors gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for these unique creatures. This knowledge fosters a sense of responsibility towards wildlife conservation. The staff's passion and expertise are frequently highlighted by visitors, making the learning experience both engaging and memorable. InstagramReddit
