What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Most visitors find Fitzroy Island a beautiful tropical paradise, easily accessible from Cairns. The ferry service is generally efficient, though some note it can get crowded on return trips. While the island offers stunning beaches and marine life, some find the cost of activities and food on the island to be on the higher side.
"I don’t really understand all the negative reviews. You pay for a ticket, it gets you to the island, it gets you back to Cairns, period. As plain and easy as that. I booked through bookme for $65 back and forth, and got the confirmation email plus details about where to go for the ferry at the terminal and check in times. The way to the island was pretty OK with many spaces, but the way back there were a lot of people without seats. Honestly, if that’s the case, go upstairs and enjoy the views of the ocean for a good 40 mins and stop complaining. Be happy ya’ll!!"

"11am departure cairns and 5pm departure from island. This time was plenty for a couple of hikes and a swim. The tickets were clear on the Cairns departure and return times, but not as specific on what time they left the dock on Fitzroy. You can clarify this on the outbound trip to avoid later confusion.
Walked out onto pier and checked in at boat (did not go to cruise terminal).
On boat, rear upper deck gets sun however given heat most moved to AC in lower deck. Toilets at rear. No access to deck at front.
Weather was perfect however given boat speed its not easy to walk around when underway.
There is some 5g access nearer to Cairns as boat hugs mainland and even patchy 4g on island - location dependent and it seemed unavailable by end of day. Wifi on island available with voucher but did not try this.
Bar/snacks for sale on lower deck. No issues with own food/drink (alcohol excepted?). Bring plenty of food to save even more, however there may be limits on hard shell coolers.
Power points on ceiling next to screens at front of lower deck. Some charged phones here.
Staff friendly and one walked around to passengers explaining island layout. You can book/hire most things on island (it was a weekday, peak season may be different).
The boat does not stay at the dock, it moors nearby, so no access while on island.
Cairns Reef Unlimited, very recently, now docks to ferry passengers between Green Island and Fitzroy Island.
5pm return trip picked up island staff going back to mainland."

"The staff onboard were extremely accommodating, I was travelling solo with 2 young kids and they offered me to board the boat early to get my little ones out of the sun. On the way over the Fitzroy the Captain spotted a pod of whales and we stoped for about 10 minutes and got a free whale watching experience also. Boat was clean and tidy. Ride was smooth."
