"Short but sweet is how I describe Dookie Rail Trail. The trail is only 8.2 km long and is ideal if you are riding with young children who can only ride short distances or for those who what to incorporate it into a longer ride around the local countryside. We parked in the town of Dookie and rode the northern section first which is about a 10km return trip. The trail goes out through farmland which at the time were growing canola plants. It was beautiful to see all the canola fields in flower with the contrast of mountains and blue skies in the background.
After we rode the northern section, we then rode the western section which is about a 6.5km return trip. This section is newer, and the trail is flat and in great condition.
If you start and finish your ride in Dookie, you will find that the town has a pub, a general store, and an emporium with a café to explore. There is also a park with kids play equipment and toilets. Nearby is Mount Major if you feel like a hike or mountain bike ride.
It would be great if the government and local councils could find the money to extend the northern section out to Katamatite and the western section into Shepparton."
