What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Dunk Island is lauded as a hidden tropical gem offering a serene escape with beautiful beaches and lush rainforest. Visitors praise the well-maintained hiking trails, particularly the climb to Mount Kootaloo for its stunning views, and the modern camping facilities. While the abandoned resort adds a unique element, some find there isn't a lot to do beyond hiking and beach relaxation.
"Dunk Island is an absolute hidden gem! A short ferry ride from Mission Beach and you’ve got a tropical paradise practically to yourself. The water is warm in winter, there are well maintained hiking trails, and even hot showers free to use. 10/10 highly recommended."

"Small but lovely campsite on the island (need to book) with very modern and pretty flash amenities block and BBQ area. There is also (somewhat randomly) a small cafe that runs Thurs-Sun only, presumably to cater for day trippers. We were the only people camping when we visited but it was off season (Mid November). There is a track up to the top of Mount Kootaloo which is well worth it - about an hour to the top and you can continue on the half-island walk which takes about 3hrs total. Beaches, rainforest with an abandoned resort thrown in as well - what more could you ask for? You'll need your own transport to get to the island - John at Bedarra Water Transfers is the man for that if you need a lift."

"Looking at this mystical island from the mainland and after reading Confessions of a Beachcomber, Dunk has been on my bucket list for a while. Did the Mt Kootaloo & circuit track. Need moderate fitness and sturdy shoes. Looking forward to the camping ground being reopened and the resort rebuilt."
