Timing is Everything: The Tide is Your Guide

Fingal Spit is a tidal sandbank, meaning its accessibility is entirely dependent on the tide. Crossing to Fingal Island is only possible at low tide, and even then, conditions can change rapidly. Always check the tide times before you go and be prepared for a potentially short window of opportunity. InstagramReddit+1

Safety First: Respect the Ocean

While beautiful, Fingal Spit can be dangerous. There are no surf lifesavers present, and the water can become rough quickly. Heed warnings about strong currents and changing tides. If conditions seem unsafe, it's best to admire the spit from a distance. Reddit+1

Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unique experience of walking the tidal sand spit to Fingal Island, praising the stunning scenery and the chance to explore the historic lighthouse. The beauty of the calm, shallow waters at low tide is also a major draw. However, many emphasize the critical importance of checking tide times due to the spit's dangerous and rapidly changing nature, and the absence of lifeguards. InstagramReddit

"We approached through the forest from box beach, was quite a walk but a nice one! Scenery is amazing at the top of the dune when you emerge. The spit is a dangerous place at the wrong time, make sure you time it with the tide. We had a look at when it was low tide and then aimed to start the walk across an hour before hand. Didn’t end up happening that way tho haha, we crossed an hour after low tide, spent about an hour across the other side then crossed back and it was still wide. The main attraction across the other side it the light house and the old residence. A beautiful walk and well worth a visit. It’s not a short trek however."

"Very cool to see the spit with beach on either side of the sandbank.

Didn't walk across it though despite it being very wide and low tide - heeded the warnings about how dangerous and quickly the water could come in. It's very windy and the sand is course but a nice place to see!

The easiest way to get there is to park at the surf club and then walk across the beach - it's about a 40min walk"

"Fingal Spit is one of the true "must visit" locations in Australia.

On the eastern end of Port Stephens, and a kilometre-ish walk from the Fingal Bay Surf Livesaving Club, it is a curving stretch of coastland that looks towards Shark Island.

There's an underwater sandbar that points to Shark Island, which, in the right conditions, means that you're swimming in pleasant, shallow water with small waves approaching from both sides. It's a brilliant experience, soaking up the beautiful Port Stephens mountains and the stunning blue water.

Please note that there are no surf lifesavers at Fingal Spit, so use common sense and if the waves are too intense or if it's at high tide, do not swim."
