Visitors praise the Patawalonga Footbridge area for its excellent dog-friendly facilities, particularly Anderson Reserve, and its appeal for bird watching. The scenic riverside path is ideal for walks, runs, and cycles, complemented by convenient amenities like BBQs and seating. Some note the need for caution regarding traffic past the bridge and the presence of prickly weeds.
"The northern end is a great spot for bird spotting at the settlement ponds the creeks flow into. The stormwater and tidal flow from the Pat is diverted out to sea here.
Our favourite part is Anderson Reserve, a great safe spot for dogs to chase a ball. Wide open grass area and good fencing. Watch out for 3 corner jacks between the path and Baseball Field, Kit hates them.
After the bridge the grass bank area narrows and we go back on lead, (traffic).
There are benches, covered seating, BBQs and drinking fountains along the way. Dog bowl and tap is near Newhaven Ave.
Toilets at Wrigley Reserve (great) and Skate Park (yuk)."

Wildlife and Nature at Patawalonga
Beyond the birds, the riverbanks offer a glimpse into a coastal ecosystem. While the primary draw for many is the birdlife, the general atmosphere of the riverfront provides a peaceful escape. The presence of benches and covered seating allows visitors to relax and soak in the natural surroundings. It’s a place where the urban environment meets natural waterways, creating a unique setting for observation and appreciation.
For those interested in the local flora and fauna, keeping an eye out for smaller creatures and plant life can also be rewarding. The area is a testament to the resilience of nature within a developed landscape. It’s a reminder of the importance of preserving these transitional zones for both wildlife and human enjoyment.
Dog-Friendly Adventures
However, it's crucial to be aware of the leash regulations. Once you move past the footbridge, the grass bank area narrows, and it's advised to put dogs back on a leash due to proximity to traffic. This ensures the safety of your pet and other park users. A dedicated dog bowl and tap near Newhaven Ave is a thoughtful amenity for keeping your furry friends hydrated during their adventures.
While the reserve is excellent, be cautious of potential hazards like '3 corner jacks' (prickly weeds) that can be found between the path and the baseball field. Being mindful of these small details ensures a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for both you and your canine companion.
Amenities and Accessibility
For convenience, drinking fountains are strategically placed, ensuring visitors can stay hydrated, especially during warmer months. A thoughtful touch for dog owners is the presence of a dog bowl and tap located near Newhaven Avenue, making it easy to refresh your pet.
When it comes to restroom facilities, there are options at both Wrigley Reserve (described as 'great') and the Skate Park (described less favorably). Wrigley Reserve is the preferred choice for its quality. The paths are generally well-maintained, making the area accessible for walking, running, and cycling, and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
