Does anyone know where I can buy Gruit beer?

I have been reading up on the history of beer and am curious about modern beers un-hopped herbal cousin! Perhaps one of you has come across it at some point, or knows of a brewery that makes/specialises in them? Thanks for your help!

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Old Goulburn Brewery for its stunning historical ambiance, delicious food, and excellent selection of locally brewed craft beers. The dog-friendly outdoor area is a significant plus for many. However, some guests find the food prices high for the portion sizes and note that service can be slow during busy periods.

"We’ve dined here numerous times now because the food is delicious and atmosphere is relaxed. They have a great selection of wines and locally made beers. Indoor and outdoor spaces are well looked after and honour the original brewery whilst putting in a charming spin. The Oktoberfest they hosted last month was lots of fun and featured three new beers, including a great Pilsner. Highly recommend a visit."

"TLDR: Terrible value, food took >1 hour to arrive

The attached photos of the burger ($28) and fish ($30) speak for themselves. For scale: the fork in each picture is a standard-sized fork. The menu and prices are in AUD, as of Nov 2025. The Schnitzel (not pictured here, $28) was acceptably-sized.

When my friends dined here, the food took >1 hour to arrive, due to a mix-up. They compensated us with free drinks. That is reasonable in itself, but it uncovers an ugly truth:
The persistent myth of "fine dining" subsists on the psychological bias that more expensive things are perceived as "higher quality". In truth, at expensive establishments you are merely paying for their disorganization.

The Astor (93 Auburn St,) has $13 steak and chips every Monday. The Bowling club (271 Sloane St) has $12 Schnitzel and Chips every Wednesday ($10 for members, membership costs $12/yr). The mundane truth is that the Astor and the Bowling club are able to offer more competitive prices because they are better organized:
- They negotiate aggressively with their suppliers.
- Their supply chains are well-oiled machines.
- Their work-schedules are bespoke to the staff and business' needs
- Their optimized workflows enable even skeleton staff to work efficiently.

Before booking a table at The Brewery, ask yourself if you're ready to piss away $38 on a steak, or pay $28 for schnitzel. In the competitive Australian hospitality industry, the high-performing businesses, like the Astor and the Bowling Club deserve your limited entertainment dollars."

"This brewery is an absolute gem. Housed in a beautifully preserved historical building, it has an atmosphere that’s both charming and unique you really feel the character of the place as soon as you walk in. The attention to detail in honoring the building’s past while creating a modern, welcoming space is amazing.

The beer selection is top-notch, with something for every palate, from crisp lagers to bold IPAs and rich stouts. My two favourites were the Local Larger and Hazy Pale. But what really surprised me was the food it’s not your typical “brewery bites.” Every dish was fresh and flavorful, making the meal just as much of a highlight as the drinks.

Between the historic setting, amazing food, and great craft beer, this brewery is the perfect spot for both locals and visitors. I’ll definitely be coming back."
