Reviews Summary

Visitors appreciate Iron Knob for its significant historical importance as the birthplace of Australia's steel industry and the dedication of its volunteer staff. The museum and tours offer a deep dive into the challenging lives of miners. However, some find the town's current state run-down, and the limited tour availability can be a drawback.

"Not everyone's cup of tea, but we got a lot out of it.
About 70ks from Whyalla, we actually stayed overnight at the RV park which is quite well set up, with toilets, showers as well I believe, camp kitchen and dump point.
Donation to stay, as all done by volunteers.
The Visitor centre has a host of old photos and collectables, that show just how hard it must have been.
Iron Knob was actually the start of the Australian Iron ore industry, being where, it was first discovered.
Once all the trouble with the Gupta fiasco is sorted, it may hopefully breath some life into the area, as well as Whyalla.
Took the tour, but be aware, doesn't run every day, which was very interesting. They had trouble with the bus, so we ended up being chauffeured around by Don, who knows all the ins and outs of the area. Very informative, muchly appreciated."

"Although this town would be seen by some as a ghost town and the surroundings are run down, the volunteer staff do a magnificent job of keeping the heritage of the miners alive. The driver of our tour showed what was then and how it is now. A job well done, thank you"

Kendon Holland

"Definitely worth a visit. Providing the history of the Iron Knob mining from its inception. The history room was well documented with early photographs. The volunteer staff were very polite, courteous and knowledgeable."
