What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Victoria Hill Mining Reserve for its rich gold mining history, impressive poppet head lookout with panoramic views, and free access. It's a great spot for walking, photography, and understanding Bendigo's past. Some caution is advised regarding uneven terrain and potential ground instability.
"A good hour spent walking the dog around this old gold mine, or several on this hill.
An easy walk around but a bit of a rough track so know your limits.
The shafts got very deep as the miners chased the quartz reefs. They were successful for many years and millions of $ were made. Flooding finally finished off this mine.
There’s a good poppet head to climb for a view of the surrounding land."

"Great place to explore the rich gold mining history of Sandhurst Town, now known as Bendigo.
There are the remains of a quartz battery, the foundations to the 2 of wheel houses for George Lansell's '180' mine.
The poppethead is accessible by stairs with great views of both, sunrises and sunsets from the top, rare in the area as one or both are usually blocked, and I've noticed more vibration and swaying while at the top of the poppethead.
The DELWP does a pretty good job of maintaining the shaft openings close to paths and paths themselves, are well maintained, although, with the recent wet weather, I've noticed some new areas with sagging and the potential for collapses and sinkholes, so always be aware of feet placement."

"Great spot to see just how extensive the gold rush was in Bendigo. 22,000,000 ounces of gold extracted, much from this exact spot, the hills are sprinkled with vestiges of a bygone era, whilst offering spectacular views of the city. There's a reasonable amount of walking to do, but following the trails, reading the history and soaking up the atmosphere are well worth the effort."
