Lysterfield park

Am thinking of going for a twilight walk at Lysterfield park lake tomorrow. But I've only ever been during the day and never paid attention to if it has a gate that gets shut or not? Will I be able to get in at about 7:30/8:00pm and get out again?

Locals making it harder for me to get to Lysterfield Lake even thou I'm a local..

I have been coming to Lysterfield Lake for years now and always parked at the top blue mark on the map. A new owner came in I believe 2 years ago and asked the council to put in no stop signs all the way to to the second blue line. I copped two fines after the first introduction…

"A Nature Lover’s Gem Less Than an Hour from Melbourne

Lysterfield Park and Lake is an absolute hidden treasure, conveniently located around a 50-minute to 1-hour drive from Melbourne depending on where you're coming from. What makes it so special is just how much it offers — whether you're after an active day out or simply a relaxing escape into nature, this park has it all.

One of my favourite things to do here is explore the network of hiking trails that wrap around the lake and surrounding bushland. The tracks are generally well-maintained and cater to a range of fitness levels, from casual walkers to more serious hikers. If you're into mountain biking, Lysterfield is especially well-known for its extensive trail network. The mountain bike trails are well-marked, offering everything from gentle cross-country routes to more technical and challenging loops, making it a real playground for riders of all skill levels.

For those looking for a more relaxed visit, the lake itself is a beautiful spot to sit and unwind. There are plenty of grassy areas ideal for picnics, with BBQ facilities conveniently located nearby. The BBQs work well and there are shelters too, although I will say the toilet facilities could use some improvement — they’re quite basic, and better lighting, more regular servicing and cleaning would really lift the amenity here. That said, they serve the purpose if you're prepared for the usual limitations of bush park facilities.

What really sets Lysterfield apart is the abundance of native wildlife. On almost every visit, I’ve seen kangaroos and wallabies grazing in the open clearings, and if you're lucky and keep your eyes open, you might spot an echidna shuffling through the undergrowth. The birdlife is just as impressive — kookaburras, parrots, eagles, and a variety of other native birds can be seen and heard throughout the park, creating a wonderfully immersive natural experience.

Lysterfield Park is great year-round, but in my opinion, Spring and Autumn offer the best balance — milder temperatures, beautiful scenery, and fewer crowds than the peak of summer when it can get quite busy (especially on weekends and public holidays). In winter, the park can feel a bit grey, damp, and overcast, but for those who don’t mind braving the cold, it still offers a very different, quieter atmosphere."

"We did a really nice walk! 15k. Wasn’t difficult. Plenty of tracks for mtb/cycles. You can spot kangaroos everywhere, quite friendly. You can get very close to them if you just walk slowly and take your time. Top of the hill is another nice stop for rest and little break or picnic."
