What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors appreciate the Shiraz Trail for its pleasant cycling path and access to McLaren Vale's wine region, especially when using e-bikes. However, some find the direct access to wineries less convenient than expected, often requiring road cycling. Despite this, the scenic vineyard views and the overall experience of exploring the region are highly regarded.
"I don’t get what all the fuss is about this trail…
The path is good quality, but I was expecting to cycle close to vines and easy access to vineyards on the way. Instead the path is largely treelined with patch of dirt on either side before a fence and then vineyards. Not exactly the cycle amongst vines I was expecting.
To get to any vineyards you have to cycle on the road around to the front entrances on a busy road.
I feel I could have the same experience cycling anywhere"

"Shiraz trail is part of a longer trail called Coast to vine trail. This trail is more suitable for cycling than walking as it is smooth, asphalted and wide enough. It passes through McLaren Vale vineyards. Abundant vine trees, and also lots of olive trees are on the way. Name Shiraz comes from a city in Iran famous for its wine and poets. This marvelous city was home of an astonishing poet named Hafez who his poets are full of metaphors with wine."

"I always love any kind of cycle trail and it’s really good there’s a cycle lane here between different towns, thats great job.
Cycle trail itself is quite boring, which will not go through any wineries,if you want to visit wineries you have cycle on road. Did the part from Mclaren Vale to Willunga and back, was too bored to do more, most wineries closed on Tuesday."

Exploring the Shiraz Trail by Bike
While the trail itself is pleasant, it's important to note that direct access to many wineries often requires venturing onto nearby roads. This means cyclists should be prepared for some road cycling and ensure they are comfortable and safe doing so. The scenery is predominantly vineyards and olive groves, offering a quintessential South Australian wine region experience.
For those who prefer not to cycle on roads, or if you're looking for a more relaxed pace, walking the trail is also a great option. Alternatively, using ride-sharing services like Uber can bridge the gaps between the trail and winery entrances, ensuring you don't miss out on any tasting opportunities.
Winery Experiences and Access
However, as mentioned, direct access from the paved trail to winery entrances isn't always straightforward. Some wineries are situated directly on the trail, while others require a short ride or walk on the road. This is a common point of feedback, with some visitors expressing a desire for more direct vineyard-side access. It's crucial to check individual winery opening hours before your visit, as many may be closed on certain days, particularly Tuesdays.
Beyond wine tasting, many wineries offer additional experiences, including dining options ranging from casual cafes to fine dining restaurants. Some also provide tours or special events, so it's worth checking their websites for what's on offer during your visit.
Beyond the Bike: Other Ways to Explore
For those who want to combine the trail experience with winery visits but prefer not to cycle on roads, Uber or other ride-sharing services are a viable and often reasonably priced option. This allows you to enjoy tastings without worrying about driving. Some visitors have also found success with foot + Uber combinations, strategically planning their route to minimize road cycling.
Additionally, the Shiraz Trail parkrun offers a unique way to engage with the trail, especially for fitness enthusiasts. It's a free, timed 5k event held weekly, providing a fun and social way to experience the local environment.
