"Simply loved our mid Oct 2025 visit to Martindale Hall - "living museum" is the right description as its such a classic building and for $20 you can enter & wander around the rooms and some of the grounds and enjoy its remarkable Georgian history and grandeur. One claim to fame that the hall has is that it appeared in the film "Picnic at Hanging Rock"
It was built for a wealthy bachelor pastoralist named Edmund Bowman Jr who engaged a London based architect, Ebenezer Gregg and 50 tradesmen were brought from England and completed the job in 1880
The hall had 32 rooms and a 7 room cellar, and within the grounds were once a polo ground, a racecourse, a boating lake and a cricket pitch!!
By 1891 debt and drought forced the Bowmans to sell all their holdings, and W.T. Mortlock bought it and his son, John Mortlock, developed Martindale Station and built it up to what we see today."
