What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Mount Schank for its stunning panoramic views and the rewarding climb to the crater rim. The well-maintained trail and unique dry crater landscape are highlights, though some note the climb requires a moderate level of fitness. It's a highly recommended stop for exploring the region's volcanic heritage.
"The Mount Schank State Heritage Area is a fascinating natural landmark located about 18 km (roughly a 17–18 minute drive) south of Mount Gambier. It is a volcanic cone formed around 5,000 years ago, making it the most recent volcanic activity on mainland Australia. Rising about 100 metres above the surrounding plains, Mount Schank is one of approximately 400 volcanoes stretching from western Victoria into southeast South Australia.
The walk up to the rim is reasonably straightforward, though there are a number of steps, so a moderate level of fitness is helpful. Once at the top, you can walk around sections of the rim and enjoy spectacular views. From one side you can see out to the Southern Ocean, while from the other side the view stretches back toward Mount Gambier and across the lush plains. Unlike the nearby Blue Lake, this crater is completely dry, filled instead with vegetation and trees that give it a very different feel.
At the base, the car park is well equipped with a toilet, picnic seating, and an information board explaining the geological history of the area. If you’re planning to visit in warmer months, I’d recommend bringing a water bottle, as the climb can be exposed.
We visited towards the end of winter and were rewarded with brilliant green scenery all around. A must-see stop when exploring the volcanic landscapes of Mount Gambier."

"A fairly steep walk up, but the trail is made with concrete ramp grips that make the climb much easier. Plenty of shaded stops on the way up but def bring water for the doggos to hydrate and cool off. The effort is well worth the views at the top."
