"Browsing the internet for places of interest to see in Ipswich (during a short stay), we were quite impressed with the Historical Society's clearly stated opening times and months of operation. So off we trotted on Friday, 16 May 2025 at approximately 11:20 AM. Approaching from the west, we saw a huge electronic billboard flashing OPEN. This made our hearts beat excitedly as we're clearly in for a great time viewing wonderful and informative displays created by a dedicated and organised volunteer team.
Alas! The gates are shut. Oh, not to worry, there's an intercom system. Oh no, no one is responding to our frantic pushing of all potential keys on the keypad. Perhaps we should just push open the gates? But we can't due to a huge chain and padlock!
Quick consultation ... let's phone the landline! Yay for modern phones that let you have all the necessary information wherever you are!
Tring-tring .... Beep-beep-beep (line is engaged). Tried a second time, same response. And a third time.
Dejected, we made a U-turn to find something else to do.
Where were you, dear Volunteers? At the show? We didn't see you there (at least not in any recognisable form as representing the Historical Society or the Cooneana Heritage Centre. And if you were at the show, why have the blazing 'Open' sign on Redbank Plains Rd? How about changing the sign to 'Visit us at the show'? How about a handwritten sign on the gate (if you cannot change the electronic board)? How about putting a message on your telephone answering system?
If we hadn't been so disappointed, we might have had the presence of mind to take photo of the padlocked gate to upload as proof.
We are volunteers, too, and know how tough it is to get people interested in our cause, so in future please do everything you can to communicate with potential visitors."
