"A little confusing for out of state people like myself, this cemetery once known as Oakleigh General Cemetery is now known as Oakleigh Pioneer Memorial Park. And unlike most cemeteries which are tucked away, is very much part of the community nearby.
Apparently over the years the bushland which had been appropriated for the dead has been nibbled away at the edges to accommodate the living so the cemetery is probably not quite as large or isolated as first envisaged.
A hundred or so years old it has some magnificent statues of angels, saints and other monuments prevalent and affordable in the past, and the modest but still artistic monuments of the more modern times.
A nice atmosphere is generated by the trees and bushes, some of which are grown close to a grave seemingly giving it shade."
