Constructed outside the @nationalgalleryaus main entrance, James Turrell’s Within Without 2010 is a major Skyspace, one of his largest and most complex installation to date. Through a circular hole from the viewing chamber inside the stupa, you can observe the ever-varying sky, its colors, and the effects of light and cloud. Highly recommend visiting this place if you come to Canberra because ...

Reviews Summary

Visitors are captivated by the 'Within Without' Skyspace's unique use of natural light, especially during sunrise and sunset, describing it as a breathtaking and serene experience. While some find it less impactful than expected, most agree it's a peaceful, meditative art installation worth visiting, particularly for its photographic potential and tranquil atmosphere.

"This is an amazingly cool place. I had seen so many photos of it but to be honest seeing it in real life was next level. Make sure you go just before sunset or sunrise to experience it in its full glory. Any other time it will just be a cool dome but at sunset, my gosh!

We’re not morning people so we went around sunset. Imagine this, you’re sitting inside the dome and the colours start to change, soft pastel hues of blues, lilacs, pinks glow inside dome like LEDs had been installed —yet it was all naturally lit by the sky through the opening at the top. I’ve never seen anything like it. IYKYK!

The rest of the place is cool too with the blue water and the chalky pink walls. We got some beautiful photos.

"Another one of James Turrell's masterpieces. The way he uses light as a form of art is truly breathtaking. We were quite lucky to see his other installation in Oslo, Norway. This one is a little different as he incorporates nature into it, there's something so peaceful as you enter through the doors. A must-visit while you're at the NGA."

"If you're looking for the perfect spot to take your wedding portraits, Skyspace has got to be one of your top choices.

The colours are stunning, reflections are perfect and there's surprisingly a lot of compositions. Plus, it's only a few minutes drive from a handful of other great photo locations including Lennox Gardens and the Old Parliament House Rose Gardens."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Light: James Turrell's Vision

James Turrell is renowned for his work with light and space, and 'Within Without' is a prime example of his mastery. Unlike traditional art that is viewed, Turrell's installations are experienced. He uses light itself as the medium, manipulating natural and artificial light to alter our perception of space and color. The Skyspace is designed to frame the sky, turning it into a dynamic artwork that is constantly changing. Reddit

'Within Without' specifically integrates the natural environment with the architectural form. The aperture at the top allows direct views of the sky, and the surrounding water and walls are carefully chosen to complement the light effects. This creates a deeply personal and meditative encounter, where the viewer becomes an active participant in the artwork. The experience is often described as serene and breathtaking, with colors appearing to glow from within the dome itself. Reddit

Visitors often note the profound impact of witnessing the subtle shifts during sunrise and sunset. The soft pastel hues that emerge are not projected or painted, but rather a direct result of how the ambient light interacts with the specially designed interior. This unique approach to art makes 'Within Without' a must-see for anyone interested in contemporary art and the power of light. Reddit

Capturing the Magic: Photography Tips

The 'Within Without' Skyspace offers a unique canvas for photographers, especially during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. The key is to capture the interplay of natural light and the architectural form. When shooting the interior, focus on the soft, diffused light that washes over the dome. Experiment with different angles to emphasize the sense of space and the framed view of the sky. Reddit

For exterior shots, the surrounding blue water and chalky pink walls provide a beautiful contrast and complement the Skyspace's form. Consider using reflections in the water to add depth to your images. Many visitors find it an ideal location for portraits, with the Skyspace itself serving as a dramatic and unique backdrop. Remember to check the National Gallery of Australia's photography policy, particularly regarding tripods, to ensure a smooth experience. Reddit

While the Skyspace is stunning at dawn and dusk, don't overlook its potential during other times of the day. The way light falls on the structure and its surroundings can still yield interesting compositions. Ultimately, the best approach is to be patient, observe the changing light, and experiment with your camera settings to best convey the serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere of this art installation.
