The peaceful atmosphere and opportunities for short walks are highly appreciated. "Lovely motel set in beautiful peaceful gardens. We enjoyed 4 nights here. Staff were excellent and friendly, all locals. Rooms included a covered verandah with outdoor setting overlooking the pool and bbq area. The rooms are squeaky clean with crockery, microwave, dishwashing provisions, toiletries. Large wall smart TV. It’s 5 minutes walk to shops. Best motel we have enjoyed in the Margaret River area."

"We booked last minute and were easily accommodated. The guy at reception was very friendly and helpful. The room was spotless and has everything you need, the bed is super comfy with doona and sheets. The views are very pretty. Had a wonderful night's sleep. We also enjoyed a delicious meal at their restaurant. I had fish and chips and the fish was super fresh. Lovely service from the ladies there too. We'll definitely be back. Love the location, very close to the pub too, so bonus. :)"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Majestic Karri Trees

The Karri Forest Explorer Drive is your gateway to experiencing the awe-inspiring Eucalyptus diversicolor, commonly known as the Karri tree. These giants are among the tallest flowering plants on Earth, with some specimens reaching over 90 meters (300 feet) in height. Their smooth, white to pinkish bark peels in ribbons, revealing a vibrant understory of smaller trees, shrubs, and ferns. Driving through these forests feels like entering another world, where sunlight dapples through the immense canopy, creating a serene and almost cathedral-like atmosphere. TikTok

Many visitors are struck by the sheer scale of the Karri trees. To truly appreciate their grandeur, it's recommended to stop at designated lookouts and take short walks. Standing at the base of a Karri and looking up can be a humbling experience. The forest floor is often carpeted with fallen leaves and bark, providing a soft, natural path for exploration. The air is typically fresh and carries the distinct scent of eucalyptus. Reddit

For photographers, the Karri forests offer incredible opportunities. The vertical lines of the trees, the play of light and shadow, and the rich textures of the forest floor are all elements that can be captured. Whether you're using a wide-angle lens to encompass the vastness or a macro lens to focus on the intricate details of moss and fungi, the Karri Forest provides a stunning natural subject. TikTok

Navigating the Explorer Drive

The Karri Forest Explorer Drive is not a single, rigidly defined route but rather a network of scenic forest roads designed for exploration. While there are official starting points and suggested loops, the beauty lies in its flexibility. Most of the drive is on unsealed gravel roads, which are generally well-maintained but can become rough or muddy after rain. Standard 2WD vehicles are usually sufficient for the main routes, but a vehicle with higher clearance can offer more comfort and confidence, especially if you encounter any uneven sections. TikTok

Crucially, mobile phone reception is extremely limited to non-existent throughout much of the Karri forest. This means relying on GPS devices or, more practically, downloading offline maps of the area before you set off. Many visitors recommend using apps like Google Maps or Maps.me and ensuring the relevant map regions are downloaded. This will prevent you from getting lost and allow you to easily find points of interest. Reddit

Allow ample time for your journey. The drive is intended to be savored, not rushed. There are numerous opportunities to pull over at designated lookouts, picnic spots, and trailheads. These stops are where you can truly connect with the forest, take short walks, and appreciate the towering trees up close. Don't be afraid to deviate slightly from the main suggested routes if you see an interesting track, but always be mindful of road conditions and your vehicle's capabilities. TikTok
