"A sign beside the church reads,
"This historic building is the oldest church on Eyre Peninsula. The original church is now the Nave section of the present building. The foundation stone for this was laid by Governor Sir Henry Fox-Young during his visit to Port Lincoln with Bishop Augustus Short in October, 1849.
Well known architect Henry Stuckey drew up the plans at a cost of 8 pounds. The builder was J. Garrett. There was a delay in the completion of the building due to the loss of the trading schooner 'Jane Flaxman' in May, 1850. All hands were lost, including the cargo of timber destined for the church's completion. The original roof was clad with Tasmanian wooden shingles.
The first service was held on 21st January, 1852. An Evensong service, it was conducted by Archdeacon Hale from the Poonindie Mission Station. From then onwards he supplied a weekly Sunday service in St. Thomas' until Octavius Hammond, the Mission's Medical Supervisor, took Holy Orders to become it's first incumbent. He was rector for 22 years.
In 1876, the Sanctuary and Transepts were added and the foundation stone for this is on the eastern wall. A new bell was hung in 1893. The church has many memorials honouring the work of early parishioners. The building has a National Trust classification listing.""
