What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for the Mersey Point Penguin Island Ferry are mixed, with many visitors expressing disappointment over the lack of advertised wildlife, particularly penguins. While the seabird populations and island walks are often praised, the glass bottom boat experience and inconsistent access to Penguin Island due to sand buildup are common criticisms. Some feel the tour is overpriced for the wildlife sightings provided.
"Disappointing tour with nearly none of the advertised wildlife spotted. When I reached the visitors centre, I was asked if someone had called me to inform me that due to sand pile up you would not be able to visit penguin island. I accepted the offer to take up their lunch instead which turned out to be disappointing as the fried rice and fish and chips were disappointing.
The trip was the worst. Skipper’s voice was hard to hear over the boat’s engine. I didn’t understand why they had a glass bottom boat when there was hardly any fishes, but only sea grass and corals to see. The whole trip was about them talking about the different birds but we were not able to see any penguins which we had came for. No dolphins too and we were told by the skipper to look out for them as they chatted while they drove the boat. We were supposed to miss the sea lions too as some rangers were on the island and due to “respect” we were not supposed to go near. Towards the end of the trip, it seems the rangers had “finished” their work and remained on the island as we went closer to see the sea lions. I can’t imagine I drove 50 mins and spent hundreds for this fruitless tour. I see others kayaking and that got them closer to the wildlife. I wouldn’t recommend this trip at all"

"This is a nice trip to do if you want to see lots of seabirds and beautifully preserved walks however the chances of seeing one of the 100 penguin population is slim to none! Unfortunately the tour doesn’t quite advertise this exactly so it was disappointing to find this out within the first five minutes of the guided walk. Given this then the trip and tour cost is a bit pricey however the tour guides are professional and friendly, the boat is well equipped and safe and it’s a nice hour or two if you’re looking for something to do and don’t baulk at the tour price!"

"A little disappointed that there are no penguins, seals or dolphins on the penguin, seal and dolphin Cruise. They should drop the price during certain parts of the season since there are none of the wildlife that you are selling tickets to see. However, the island has a lot of other really great views and lots of other wildlife. Just don't be disappointed what you are going to see."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
If the island is inaccessible due to sand buildup, the offered lunch package might be a less exciting alternative for children. It's wise to have a backup plan or manage expectations beforehand to ensure a positive experience for the whole family. The glass bottom boat might be interesting for younger children, but reviews suggest it can be disappointing.
💰 Budget Travelers
Some travelers found kayaking to be a more cost-effective way to potentially see wildlife, though this requires additional planning and equipment. If the ferry is not running to the island, inquire about any alternative offerings and their pricing to ensure you're getting value for your money.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Be aware that the glass bottom boat's viewing panels may not be ideal for photography due to their condition. If your primary goal is wildlife photography, consider visiting during times when seabirds are most active, and always maintain a respectful distance from all wildlife.

Understanding Penguin Island's Wildlife Challenges
Beyond penguins, the island is a haven for a variety of seabirds, including shearwaters, petrels, and terns. These birds are often more reliably observed and provide a significant wildlife attraction. While seals and dolphins are sometimes sighted, they are not a guaranteed part of the experience. Visitors are encouraged to manage their expectations and appreciate the diverse birdlife and the natural beauty of the island's coastal environment.
Some travelers suggest that kayaking might offer a more intimate wildlife experience, allowing for closer encounters than the ferry tour. However, it's crucial to prioritize safety and respect for the wildlife and environment when choosing such activities.
The Glass Bottom Boat Experience
Instead of vibrant fish, passengers often report seeing only seagrass and corals, which may not be as captivating for everyone. Some visitors have found the experience to be lacking in entertainment, with a few even falling asleep due to the limited engagement. Compared to international standards for similar attractions, the glass bottom boat experience on this tour is considered by some to be far behind.
It's worth noting that the effectiveness of the glass bottom boat can also depend on water clarity and the presence of marine life at the time of the tour. While some visitors found it disappointing, others might still find value in a brief look at the underwater environment, especially if they are not expecting a highly curated aquarium-like experience.
Navigating Island Access and Seasonal Considerations
Seasonal variations significantly impact the wildlife viewing experience. While the island is named for penguins, their numbers can fluctuate throughout the year. Some reviews indicate that during certain parts of the season, the chances of seeing penguins are slim to none. This has led to suggestions that ticket prices should be adjusted during these low-visibility periods.
For those prioritizing penguin sightings, researching the best time of year for little penguin activity in Western Australia is highly recommended. Even outside of peak penguin season, the island offers other attractions, including numerous seabirds and scenic walks, which can still make for a pleasant outing. The professional and friendly nature of the tour guides is often highlighted as a positive aspect, even when wildlife sightings are limited.
