Manage Expectations for Wildlife Sightings

While advertised as a penguin, seal, and dolphin cruise, many visitors report low chances of seeing these animals, especially penguins, due to conservation efforts and seasonal variations. Be prepared for a focus on seabirds and island scenery instead.

Consider Off-Season for Penguin Viewing

Penguin numbers can be low during certain times of the year. If seeing penguins is your primary goal, research the best seasons for sightings and be aware that the 'Penguin Island' name might be aspirational rather than guaranteed.

Reviews Summary

Reviews for the Mersey Point Penguin Island Ferry are mixed, with many visitors expressing disappointment over the lack of advertised wildlife, particularly penguins. While the seabird populations and island walks are often praised, the glass bottom boat experience and inconsistent access to Penguin Island due to sand buildup are common criticisms. Some feel the tour is overpriced for the wildlife sightings provided.

"Disappointing tour with nearly none of the advertised wildlife spotted. When I reached the visitors centre, I was asked if someone had called me to inform me that due to sand pile up you would not be able to visit penguin island. I accepted the offer to take up their lunch instead which turned out to be disappointing as the fried rice and fish and chips were disappointing.

The trip was the worst. Skipper’s voice was hard to hear over the boat’s engine. I didn’t understand why they had a glass bottom boat when there was hardly any fishes, but only sea grass and corals to see. The whole trip was about them talking about the different birds but we were not able to see any penguins which we had came for. No dolphins too and we were told by the skipper to look out for them as they chatted while they drove the boat. We were supposed to miss the sea lions too as some rangers were on the island and due to “respect” we were not supposed to go near. Towards the end of the trip, it seems the rangers had “finished” their work and remained on the island as we went closer to see the sea lions. I can’t imagine I drove 50 mins and spent hundreds for this fruitless tour. I see others kayaking and that got them closer to the wildlife. I wouldn’t recommend this trip at all"

"This is a nice trip to do if you want to see lots of seabirds and beautifully preserved walks however the chances of seeing one of the 100 penguin population is slim to none! Unfortunately the tour doesn’t quite advertise this exactly so it was disappointing to find this out within the first five minutes of the guided walk. Given this then the trip and tour cost is a bit pricey however the tour guides are professional and friendly, the boat is well equipped and safe and it’s a nice hour or two if you’re looking for something to do and don’t baulk at the tour price!"

Niamh P. Joyce

"A little disappointed that there are no penguins, seals or dolphins on the penguin, seal and dolphin Cruise. They should drop the price during certain parts of the season since there are none of the wildlife that you are selling tickets to see. However, the island has a lot of other really great views and lots of other wildlife. Just don't be disappointed what you are going to see."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

Understanding Penguin Island's Wildlife Challenges

Penguin Island, despite its name, faces challenges in consistently showcasing its namesake. Visitor reviews frequently mention the difficulty of spotting penguins, with numbers sometimes being low due to conservation efforts and seasonal factors. Reddit+2 This can lead to disappointment for those expecting guaranteed sightings. The island is home to a small population of little penguins, and their visibility can be impacted by breeding cycles and the need to protect them from disturbance. Reddit

Beyond penguins, the island is a haven for a variety of seabirds, including shearwaters, petrels, and terns. These birds are often more reliably observed and provide a significant wildlife attraction. Reddit While seals and dolphins are sometimes sighted, they are not a guaranteed part of the experience. Visitors are encouraged to manage their expectations and appreciate the diverse birdlife and the natural beauty of the island's coastal environment. Reddit

Some travelers suggest that kayaking might offer a more intimate wildlife experience, allowing for closer encounters than the ferry tour. Reddit However, it's crucial to prioritize safety and respect for the wildlife and environment when choosing such activities.

The Glass Bottom Boat Experience

The glass bottom boat component of the Mersey Point ferry tour is intended to offer a glimpse into the underwater world. However, reviews suggest this aspect can be underwhelming. Reddit The viewing areas are described as small and can be obstructed by dirt or scratches, hindering visibility. Reddit Furthermore, the boat may not stop for sufficient durations at points of interest, leaving passengers with limited time to observe the marine life or seabed. Reddit

Instead of vibrant fish, passengers often report seeing only seagrass and corals, which may not be as captivating for everyone. Reddit Some visitors have found the experience to be lacking in entertainment, with a few even falling asleep due to the limited engagement. Reddit Compared to international standards for similar attractions, the glass bottom boat experience on this tour is considered by some to be far behind. Reddit

It's worth noting that the effectiveness of the glass bottom boat can also depend on water clarity and the presence of marine life at the time of the tour. While some visitors found it disappointing, others might still find value in a brief look at the underwater environment, especially if they are not expecting a highly curated aquarium-like experience. Reddit

Navigating Island Access and Seasonal Considerations

Access to Penguin Island can be a point of contention for visitors. Sand buildup is a recurring issue that can prevent the ferry from reaching the island, leading to disappointment and alternative arrangements like lunch packages. Reddit It's essential for visitors to confirm island access before their trip, especially during periods when this is more likely to occur. Reddit

Seasonal variations significantly impact the wildlife viewing experience. While the island is named for penguins, their numbers can fluctuate throughout the year. Some reviews indicate that during certain parts of the season, the chances of seeing penguins are slim to none. Reddit+1 This has led to suggestions that ticket prices should be adjusted during these low-visibility periods. Reddit

For those prioritizing penguin sightings, researching the best time of year for little penguin activity in Western Australia is highly recommended. Even outside of peak penguin season, the island offers other attractions, including numerous seabirds and scenic walks, which can still make for a pleasant outing. Reddit The professional and friendly nature of the tour guides is often highlighted as a positive aspect, even when wildlife sightings are limited. Reddit
