"One of the best campground and places we stayed on in our 6 months around Australia Trip. The koala are so near and absolutely gorgeous. The communication with the owner are easy and clear. A lot of space and even big caravan will fit. The road is a little bit rough for the last 1km but shouldn't be a problem. Fly's can be annoying but all the rest is just amazing. Highly recommend this place ."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Mikkira Station Wildlife Experience

Mikkira Station is celebrated for its unparalleled opportunity to observe koalas in their natural habitat. Unlike many other sanctuaries, Mikkira allows visitors to see these iconic marsupials thriving amongst ancient eucalyptus trees. The station's commitment to preserving the natural environment means that wildlife, including dozens of koalas, kangaroos, emus, and various native birds, roam freely and are accustomed to human presence. This creates an intimate and authentic wildlife encounter that many visitors describe as a highlight of their Australian travels. Reddit

Visitors often share how the koalas pay little attention to them, continuing their daily routines of sleeping, feeding, and climbing. This allows for incredible photographic opportunities and a genuine sense of observing nature undisturbed. The landscape itself, with its gnarled eucalyptus trees and open spaces, adds to the charm and provides a picturesque backdrop for these encounters. The owners, particularly Helen, are praised for their knowledge and passion, enhancing the educational aspect of the visit. Reddit

While the experience is largely self-guided once on the property, opting for a guided tour can significantly enrich your visit. Guides share fascinating insights into the local ecosystem, the history of the station, and the behaviors of the wildlife. This makes Mikkira Station not just a place to see animals, but a place to learn and connect with the Australian bushland on a deeper level. TikTok

Planning Your Visit: Camping and Tours

Mikkira Station offers two primary ways to experience its natural beauty: camping and guided tours. Camping provides an immersive experience, allowing you to stay overnight amidst the wildlife. However, camping is typically seasonal, usually concluding at the end of October, so it's crucial to check availability and book well in advance if you plan to visit during this period. The campground is known for its spaciousness, accommodating even large caravans. Reddit

For those who prefer a shorter visit or cannot camp, guided tours are highly recommended. These tours, often lasting a couple of hours, are led by knowledgeable individuals who can point out wildlife and share valuable information about the station and its inhabitants. Some visitors have even arranged for tours that include transport, making it convenient for day-trippers. The cost of tours can vary, with some mentioning around $80 for a comprehensive experience. Reddit

Regardless of your choice, be prepared for the final kilometer of the access road, which is unsealed and can be a bit rough. Driving slowly and carefully is advised. Additionally, be aware that flies can be present, especially during warmer months, so bringing insect repellent is a good idea. Reddit
