What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors rave about the St. Helens Mountain Bike Trails for their diverse offerings, from beginner-friendly green trails to challenging technical routes and a fun pump track. The well-maintained facilities and one-way trail system are frequently praised. However, a significant concern raised by multiple reviewers is the lack of an on-site first-aid kit, with one visitor unfortunately requiring hospital treatment.
"Really has everything you need here, apart from a first aid kit of course 😂. Really, you should be carrying one. MTB is short for hurting yourself! 😂
I did a challenging ride from the wharf to the summit and down Old Salty Dog. I was feeling it by the time I got to the summit! 🥵
There was even some uphill on the downhill section. 😂
I saw no riders on the trail all day, and it’s great having one way only tracks. Beauty!
On Old Salty Dog there are jump lines you can take which all have gaps, I didn’t do them on my first time out, you need some speed for them. I’ll just look and admire the skills I think 🤔
The facilities are great, good toilets, food bins, parking. Tops!
There are shuttles available if you want to cheat! 😂😂😂

"Really great mountain bike park for any beginners or advanced bike riders! My kids absolutely loved the pump track.
Only knocked 2 stars off because they do not have an available first aid kit & closest place for medical help is the hospital, which is where I sadly ended up. But otherwise lots of seating, good food."

Navigating the Trails: From Green to Black Diamond
As riders progress, they can explore the increasingly challenging blue and black diamond trails. These routes incorporate more technical elements such as rock gardens, roots, steep descents, and bermed corners. The Old Salty Dog trail is particularly noted for its jump lines, which feature gaps that require speed and skill to navigate successfully. It's crucial for riders to honestly assess their abilities and choose trails accordingly to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Beyond the traditional singletrack, the pump track provides a dedicated area for honing skills like pumping, jumping, and cornering. This feature is a significant draw for families and riders looking to practice fundamental techniques in a controlled environment. The park's design emphasizes one-way traffic on many trails, enhancing flow and reducing the risk of head-on collisions, a feature highly appreciated by riders.
Essential Gear and Safety Practices
When it comes to riding gear, protective equipment is highly recommended. This includes a certified helmet, gloves, and potentially knee and elbow pads, especially when tackling more challenging terrain. Wearing appropriate cycling attire, such as moisture-wicking jerseys and padded shorts, can also enhance comfort during longer rides.
Community advice strongly emphasizes respecting trail etiquette. This includes yielding to uphill riders, maintaining control, and being mindful of other trail users. The presence of one-way trails is a significant safety feature, and adhering to these designations is crucial for preventing accidents. Finally, always inform someone of your riding plans, including your expected return time and the trails you intend to ride.
Beyond the Ride: Facilities and Amenities
For those looking to maximize their riding time without expending excessive energy on climbs, shuttles are available. This service allows riders to be transported to higher points on the mountain, enabling them to focus on the downhill descents and technical features. While dedicated dining facilities are not prominently mentioned, the presence of food bins suggests that bringing your own provisions for a picnic is a common and encouraged practice.
Visitors have noted that while the facilities are generally good, the absence of an on-site first-aid kit is a significant drawback, underscoring the importance of personal preparedness. The overall sentiment is that the park provides a solid foundation for a great mountain biking experience, with a focus on the trails themselves.
