What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Fantasea Cruising in Sydney is highly praised for its punctual and scenic harbour tours, offering excellent value and friendly service. Visitors particularly enjoy the stunning views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and the convenience of ferry services to attractions like Taronga Zoo. While whale watching can be thrilling, some find the zodiac boats prone to spray and motion sickness, though the chance of seeing whales and the offer of a second trip are significant draws.
"Booked my Taronga Zoo tickets with return ferry via Fantasea Cruising and it was such a smooth experience! I travelled solo and the ticket redemption was super easy. Ferry arrived right on time. Loved how convenient it was to get to the zoo by ferry while taking in the harbour views.
I only had about 3 hours to explore because I had another activity after, but it was definitely worth it. Plenty of food and drink options inside, and the zoo has animals we don’t have back home so I really enjoyed every bit of it. Highly recommend going in the morning for the shows (like the sea lion one) and to see the animals more active. Plus, you’ll get an amazing view of the Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House from the zoo! 🦁🦘⛴️"

"I have been on several whale watching tours. This time, I booked Fantasea's 2.5 hour adventure whale watching cruise off Sydney in Fantasea's fast zodiac style boat. There were some 25 persons on board in the compact vessel which got to the open ocean quickly. Water sprays hit most of us and by the time we started looking for whales, we were mostly drenched. Luckily camera gear was inside the bag, and escaped getting wet. Advisable to wear hooded raincoat to minimise spray effects. The company should advise customers. When stationary, I found this small vessel tended to be tossed about more than the larger boats. I got seasick as a consequence. A number of others were seasick well before me. On the plus side, we managed to see a number of whales, some up close, especially after the other boats left. But taking photos with the vessel tossing about was a tricky task. Next time I will take the large catamaran - so no drenching and easier photography."

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
For whale watching, while exciting, the zodiac-style boats might be too bumpy or wet for very young children. If you opt for whale watching, choose a larger catamaran if available, or ensure your children are well-prepared for the conditions. The offer of a free second ride if whales aren't seen is a great reassurance for families investing in this experience.
💰 Budget Travelers
While whale watching tours are a bit pricier (around $85 AUD), the possibility of a free second trip if no whales are spotted adds significant value. Bringing your own snacks and water can also help save money on onboard purchases. Opting for weekday travel can sometimes mean fewer crowds and potentially more relaxed experiences.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Whale watching presents a different photographic challenge. While the zodiac boats offer a dynamic perspective, the motion can make sharp shots difficult. A camera with good image stabilization and a fast shutter speed is recommended. Protecting your gear from sea spray is crucial; a waterproof bag is a must. Despite the challenges, capturing a breaching whale is an incredibly rewarding photographic achievement.

The Thrill of Whale Watching
Travelers have shared incredible moments, describing the experience as 'magical' and 'life-changing.' While some found photography challenging on the moving zodiacs, the sheer joy of witnessing whales breach and play often outweighs the photographic difficulties. For those prone to seasickness or who prioritize easier photography, opting for a larger catamaran might be a better choice, though the zodiacs offer a more intimate and fast-paced encounter.
Key advice from those who've been includes booking in advance, especially during peak season (June-July), and being prepared for the elements. The cost, around $85 AUD, is considered well worth it by many for such a unique wildlife encounter in Sydney.
Exploring Sydney Harbour by Ferry
Beyond the standard sightseeing tours, Fantasea offers specialized passes like the Harbour Hopper, which allows you to explore destinations like Manly Beach at your own pace. This hop-on, hop-off flexibility is ideal for day-trippers wanting to experience different facets of Sydney's coastal lifestyle. The ferry service to Taronga Zoo is another popular option, combining a scenic journey with a visit to the zoo, offering unique harbour views from the zoo grounds itself.
Many reviewers highlight the ease of online booking and the smooth operation of the services. The inclusion of free tea and coffee on some longer cruises adds a touch of comfort to the journey. Whether you're looking for a quick overview of the harbour or a more immersive experience exploring different bays, Fantasea's ferry services are a highly recommended and cost-effective way to see Sydney from the water.
