"What an incredible trip! Cannot recommend whale tales enough. The crew Mette, Isaac and Alex were amazing! Could not believe how many whales we saw and how close we got to them. Such an informative and safe boat trip, would say anyone who wants to see some whales needs to go out with them it was such a fun afternoon and a once in a lifetime moment.
Had some great views of the Harbour bridge and opera house on the way there and back as well so great opportunity to get a few pictures and enjoy the view!"

"Even though a few of us got seasick, we had a great time with this tour. They gave us fair warning that there would be a lot of waves that day and gave the option to come again in the afternoon or even on a separate day, which was considerate. When we DID get sick, they gave us plenty of puke bags.
The captain and his assistant were both very attentive, helpful, and instructional, even taking time to talk to the kids. We were able to see several whales multiple times and were very satisfied."

"I participated on the tour with Whale Watching yesterday, and it was an absolute amazing experience.
Alex and Alex were our wonderful tourguides and captain, taking care of everything and everyone, providing a lot of intel about the whales and ensuring everybody has a good time. You could just tell they both love their jobs.
We had a bit of a windy weather but the boat felt safe and we could move freely to better see the whales.
And we spotted them almost rightaway, mother and calf, later joined by another big whale, they even breached and jumped out of the water. It simply was amazing.
We‘ve been told that we were really lucky to have seen it. Even if you are not as lucky, I am sure the guys will make the experience a good one and they do their best to show you some of these beautiful animals.
Thank you guys, it was amazing! Absolutely recommend them 5/5 ☺️"

For Different Travelers
Tailored advice for your travel style
👨👩👧 Families with Kids
To make the trip smoother for families, consider booking a tour during calmer weather if possible. Bringing snacks and drinks (check tour policy first) can help keep little ones happy. Ensure children are supervised at all times and consider life jackets for added safety, though most tour boats provide them. The excitement of spotting a whale can be a highlight of any family vacation in Sydney.
💰 Budget Travelers
Consider if the tour offers a 'no sighting, free return trip' policy. This can provide peace of mind and extra value if your initial trip doesn't yield sightings. While free land-based whale watching spots are rare and offer distant views, a well-chosen tour can be a worthwhile splurge for an unforgettable experience.
📸 Photography Enthusiasts
Don't forget to also capture the iconic Sydney skyline during your journey. The combination of marine life and world-famous landmarks makes for truly spectacular shots. Many tours offer excellent vantage points for both.

In-depth insights and expert knowledge
The Humpback Whale Migration
Whale Tales and similar operators are experts at navigating these waters to find the whales. They understand the whales' behavior and migration patterns, increasing your chances of a memorable encounter. Seeing a humpback whale breach, where it leaps almost entirely out of the water, is a truly awe-inspiring spectacle that many visitors describe as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Beyond the sheer size and power of these animals, learning about their complex social structures and the challenges they face, such as entanglement in fishing gear and ship strikes, adds a deeper layer to the experience. Responsible whale watching tours prioritize the well-being of the whales, ensuring that interactions are respectful and do not disrupt their natural behaviors.
Choosing the Right Whale Watching Tour
Look for tours that emphasize conservation and ethical practices. Some operators, like Whale Tales, have been praised for their decision to move further out to sea to avoid disturbing whales already surrounded by multiple boats, demonstrating a genuine respect for the animals. This approach not only benefits the whales but often leads to more unique and less crowded sightings.
Pay attention to the boat size and type. Smaller, faster vessels might offer a more agile experience, while larger boats can provide more stability. Always check recent reviews and testimonials to gauge customer satisfaction regarding sightings, crew performance, and overall value.
Photography Tips for Whale Watching
Protecting your gear from the elements is also key. The sea spray can be significant, so a waterproof camera bag or a rain cover is essential. Regularly wiping your lens with a microfiber cloth will ensure clear photos. Consider using your camera's continuous shooting mode to capture a sequence of actions, increasing your chances of getting that perfect shot.
Don't forget to also capture the stunning Sydney backdrop! The journey to and from the whale watching grounds offers fantastic opportunities to photograph the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Be ready to switch lenses or perspectives to capture both the marine life and the iconic cityscape.
