What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking views and the unique experience of reaching Australia's highest mainland peak. The well-maintained boardwalk and the option of the chairlift make it accessible for many. However, the unpredictable alpine weather and the need for careful preparation are frequently mentioned challenges.
"The initial hike is the toughest as your get use to the walk (after the chairlift). The rest is a breeze as you can walk at your own pace and even have a bathroom break. The views along the walk is phenomenal and the flora around is unique. If it is a dry day, do not bother bringing a raincoat but brings multiple layers that can be easily taken off. Remind yourself to bring multiple layers of clothing in the first place as you cant create layers if u get cold but can remove the layers if it gets warm. On a sunny day it is highly recommended you wear sunscreen and reapply every 20 mins. The summit is worth it."

"Is sounds super challenging but really anyone with even a moderate fitness level can achieve this easily. Take the chair lift from Thredbo and then the walkway has only gentle inclines. Only at the end doesn't get a bit steeper, but by then you are committed. We took 4 hours, so allow 5 with a stop at the top. Suncream and wide hat is a must. It will be colder on the walk, and we had a windy day so colder still. The views you get from the top make it totally worth it."

"Amazing feeling and expedition to reach the highest peak of Australia. Even in December we had seen a patch of snow areas. Walk is good well defined. Scenic and few areas are challenging. We took a chairlift from Thredbo. If you are planning to take chairlift make sure that you plan your time wisely so won't miss the last chairlift down. My 8 year old son did the whole walk without any fuss. Get dressed in layers as it get cold and the same time you feel hot. Food and drinks are essential to carry. Take asthma pump if you need it. Have fun and enjoy."

The Thredbo Chairlift Advantage
However, it's crucial to be aware of the last chairlift departure time for the return journey. Missing it means a long walk back down, which can be challenging, especially after a full day of hiking. Planning your time wisely and checking the operating schedule is paramount for a smooth experience.
This option transforms the trek into a more manageable day trip, allowing visitors to focus on enjoying the summit views and the unique alpine environment without the exhaustion of a full day's hike from the base.
Navigating Alpine Weather
It's essential to check the weather forecast meticulously before and during your trip. Conditions can shift from sunny and pleasant to severe within hours. Be prepared for all possibilities, and never underestimate the mountain. Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses) is also vital, as the sun's rays are intense at higher altitudes, even on cooler days.
Many visitors have shared experiences of being caught off guard by sudden weather changes, leading to difficult conditions or even the need to turn back. Being prepared with appropriate gear, including waterproof and windproof outer layers, can make the difference between a challenging but enjoyable hike and a miserable or even dangerous one.
The Main Range Walk Experience
This boardwalk section is particularly memorable, winding through the rugged terrain and offering continuous, breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. It’s a testament to the park’s efforts in balancing visitor access with environmental preservation.
While the boardwalk makes much of the walk easier, the terrain can still be uneven in places, and the final ascent to the summit involves a steeper incline. The Kosciuszko Summit Walk map is helpful for understanding the route and identifying key points of interest like Seaman's Hut, a historic shelter that offers a glimpse into the area's past.
