While the subject matter can be confronting, the educational value and the overall experience are highly recommended.

"The Historic Whaling Station in Albany is a fascinating and unique attraction that offers a deep dive into an important part of Western Australia’s history. Once a fully operational whaling station, it has been carefully preserved and transformed into an educational museum and cultural site.

The experience starts with a well-structured self-guided tour through the old processing factory, where you learn about the history of whaling, how it shaped Albany’s economy, and the impact it had on both people and the environment. The displays are detailed and engaging, with original machinery, artifacts, photographs, and short films that bring the story to life.

One of the highlights is being able to step inside a fully restored whaling ship something you won’t find anywhere else in Australia. It gives you a real sense of what life at sea was like for the crews who worked here. Kids and adults alike will find it eye-opening.

The site has evolved beyond just the history of whaling. There are beautifully maintained gardens, a wildlife park with Australian animals, and a wildflower display, making it a well-rounded experience for families. The views from the grounds overlooking King George Sound are spectacular, and there are picnic areas where you can relax and take it all in.

Practical info: There is an entry fee, but it’s excellent value given how much there is to see and do you could easily spend a few hours here. There’s also a café and gift shop with plenty of options for refreshments and souvenirs. Parking is convenient and included in the ticket price.

Overall, the Historic Whaling Station is an absolute must-visit in Albany. It’s both educational and moving shedding light on a tough industry that was once central to the region, while also celebrating how far we’ve come in marine conservation. A visit here leaves you with a deep appreciation for Albany’s history and its incredible coastline."

"We stopped by here for coffee and a quick bite while waiting for the rain to clear — we came specifically to try and spot whales from the shore. Luckily, the rain started to ease, so we walked outside and enjoyed the stunning view.

We were able to spot whales from a distance — they appeared from time to time, and even though they were far away, we could still see them clearly enough. A lovely and peaceful experience!"
