What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area for its scenic beauty and well-signed mountain biking trails, offering an old-school singletrack experience with breathtaking views. Some reviewers note that the trails could benefit from further investment and emphasize the importance of controlled speeds due to shared usage.
"Nice MTB trails, well signed & great views. I was visiting from Hobart and staying in West Launceston, closest & easiest access for me was via the Gorge Rd in Trevallyn."
Marcie B
"This city central recreational area is situated very high above the city of Launceston. It is bordered by the Cataract Gorge, the suburb of Trevallyn and Trevallyn Dam.
The legacy mtb trails network here is very well-signposted and mapped: these trails offer mtb riders an old school, XC mtb singletrack experience. They could, however, do with further investment from city/state authorities, to update the network to the purpose-built standards of nearby Georgetown & Wild Mersey MTB trails networks. It is still an excellent, very scenic place to ride and explore with novice riders, or kids and the family dog. The network offers panoramic, breathtaking views of the distant mountains: the gradients and tech sections are not too demanding- providing one stays on the marked trails...
If exploring the many other firetrails, streets and singletracks which connect the ridgelines of Trevallyn together, an ebike is strongly recommended as gradients are VERY steep!
NOTE: Trail use is unstructured so all trails are ridden in both directions: keep your speed under control so you don't collide with anyone. Much of this MTB network is shared with walkers, runners, some horses and dogs. Once again, keep your speed under control here! It is a busy recreational area because of its city proximity. The signs will tell you where you may or may not ride or take your trail dog.
PARKING:
Trail heads are situated at Cnr. Duck Reach Rd & Reatta Rd. (Nice, easy start & finish!) No toilets- these are situated at Hoohoo Hut parking, at the end of Duck Reach Road.
OR Try Gorge Road Extension Peppermint trail head: First small parking up on the right aftr going through the Cascades Gorge gates. (This is a difficult start UP stacked loops which connect to the powerlines ridge trails- console yourself with thoughts of the downhill home!?)
OTHER ATTRACTIONS: Lions Park pump and jump spot: ride down the powerlines servitude to connect. There is usually a Thai food truck there from 3pm.
Trevallyn Shopping Centre: Cafe, Bakery, Deli (Stocks South African food like biltong, droewors and other RSA brands) Plenty post-ride rewards ono !"
