Prepare for an Underground Adventure

The Pound Bend Tunnel offers a unique underground experience, but be ready for wet conditions. Water levels can be knee-deep or higher, and the rocky riverbed is slippery. Headlamps are highly recommended for navigating the low light, and sturdy water shoes are essential for grip and protection.

Family Fun with Caveats

While Pound Bend is a great spot for family picnics and a dip in the Yarra, caution is advised for very young children or those with mobility issues. The rocky terrain and potential for fast currents in certain areas mean it's best suited for older kids and competent swimmers.

Reviews Summary

Pound Bend offers a unique adventure with its underground tunnel and refreshing Yarra River swimming spots, making it a popular family picnic destination. Visitors praise the natural beauty and the thrill of exploring the tunnel, though caution is advised regarding slippery rocks and water depth. Some find the exit challenging and note that water quality can vary.

"About 100 m of underground rock and water walking. Hard enough to do that you would need to be 10 plus years and have decent rock hopping water shoes. Started and the exit and used rock walls and visible rock edge to walk through. Just over knee high water (tall folks 6ft and above) in place and lots of unknown slow sliding of foot into unknown underwater areas. Low light and head lamps would have been really helpful for about 1/5 of the way but phone worked as a torch for us. Little spiders on all walls but not too many which can be a bit ick and the exit fro the mouth was a little hard as you had to go through waist high off shoot of the Yarra and it’s a fast flow. If you are not a strong swimmer I would not recommend the walk over land to tetirn as you may float away. If you are a competent swimmer then you would be fine. The track to the road is a little tricky to start and not well used but doable. Exit cave at the left and then head across the mouth of the tunnel over a track of rocks under the water, (waist high on long people 6ft plus)then a little climb up on rocks and you will be onto the track. Steep and needs maintenance but ok. 300 m back to the exit of the tunnel via steps to left of the signage ata the gate. Great fun activity and a 6/10 challenge for me and my mini"

"Who knew! I didn't! So glad I found this gem and so close to home too. Took the kids down for a splash at sunset, such a pretty spot. The rapids are not too strong, and fairly shallow but was easy enough for the kids to manage. Best place for a dip on a hot day"

Navigating the Pound Bend Tunnel

The star attraction is undoubtedly the Pound Bend Tunnel, a 100-meter underground passage carved through the rock. This isn't a dry walk; expect water levels to be around knee-high for most adults, and potentially higher in some spots. The riverbed is composed of slippery rocks, making sturdy footwear absolutely essential. Many visitors recommend bringing a headlamp or using your phone's flashlight, as the tunnel is quite dark, though some manage with just their phone's light. Reddit

Be prepared for the unexpected – the water depth can vary, and there are areas where your foot might slide into deeper, unseen sections. The exit from the tunnel can also be a bit challenging, sometimes requiring wading through waist-high water with a faster flow, especially if you choose to return via the land track. Reddit

This adventure is best suited for those who are comfortable with water and uneven terrain. While it's a fantastic experience, it's not ideal for those with significant mobility issues or very young children who might struggle with the conditions. Reddit
