What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise Maruku Arts for its authentic cultural experience, particularly the dot painting workshops led by knowledgeable Anangu artists. Many highlight the opportunity to learn about Indigenous stories and symbols, creating a deeply rewarding and educational encounter. While overwhelmingly positive, a few reviews mention feeling pressured or that the experience was overly commercialized, though this is not the dominant sentiment.
"My sister-in-law and me were blessed to experience this workshop on 15th March 2023. The guide and artist (Verne) were fabulous. I'd met Vern the evening before, and had bought a painting of 'The Three Sisters'. At the workshop she painted a beautiful 'Seven Sisters' artwork which I also bought. How could I not? I'd spent some of the time sitting alongside her, watching her and chatting.
We loved learning more about some of the symbols and signs involved in Aboriginal art, using sand to demonstrate. Once we'd all had a go at painting ourselves (mine wasn't great sadly, but Jenny's was amazing!), we then told our stories that the painting symbolised.
Worth every cent. I'd highly recommend this to anyone visiting Yulara/Uluru."

"Fantastic cultural experience with locals.
We have two young boys who also got a lot out of the experience. Wonderful to learn what the symbols on desert paintings mean. Makes you appreciate aboriginal art in a whole new light. Highly recommend."
Hayley Dean
"This workshop was incredibly special, as normally non-indigenous people wouldn't be able to do dot painting. We were taken through some of the aspects of dot painting and the stories behind them by an Anangu mother and daughter, with heartfelt translations by Sophie. We were so privileged to be part of this, and were then encouraged to think of a story to base our paintings on.
At the end we shared our paintings and stories, and we were even given more time to finish them off if we wanted.
It was a very relaxing and educational experience!"

The Significance of Dot Painting
Historically, these stories were painted onto the ground using natural pigments for ceremonies. The adoption of acrylic paints and canvas allowed these artworks to be shared more widely, providing a vital economic and cultural connection for Indigenous communities. Visiting Maruku Arts offers a unique opportunity to learn about this rich tradition directly from the source.
During a workshop, you'll learn how to use dots to create patterns and symbols that tell a story. The process is often described as meditative and deeply personal, allowing participants to connect with the land and culture in a meaningful way. The guidance from Anangu artists ensures that the cultural integrity of the art form is respected and shared authentically.
Cultural Etiquette and Respect
While photography is generally encouraged to capture your experience, always ask for permission before taking close-up photos of artworks or individuals, especially if they are not directly involved in the workshop. Be aware that some stories or symbols may be sacred and not intended for widespread sharing. The artists and guides will indicate what is appropriate.
Some visitors have reported feeling pressured or that the experience was overly commercialized. However, many more find it to be an incredibly special and authentic encounter. Approaching the visit with a genuine desire to learn and connect, rather than just to acquire a souvenir, will greatly enhance your experience and demonstrate respect for the Anangu culture.
