Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the absolutely stunning viewpoints and the rewarding nature of the hike, despite its steep sections. The historical significance of Dürnstein Castle and the beauty of the Wachau Valley are consistently praised. Some note that the trail is challenging and not for absolute beginners, and the optional Via Ferrata requires caution.

"Absolutely stunning viewpoint! The trail to get here is fairly steep, but nothing too extreme – you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Danube. Don’t worry, the ferrata sections only start further up. There is a short Via Ferrata (type A, about 300 meters) that is secured with cables, but it’s completely optional and only beyond this viewpoint. Just a heads-up: the ferrata is definitely not suitable for dogs. If you stop at this spot, you’ll already experience the magic of Vogelbergsteig without having to push further. Truly a hidden gem!"

"Beautiful hiking trail, starting and ending in Dürnstein.
Option 1: start with going up to Dürnstein Castle ruins, afterwards follow signs to Starhemberg Warte and after the restaurant Fesslhütte, follow signs for the Vogelbergsteig back to Dürnstein.
Make sure to have sturdy footwear and are not scared of heights! This trail is not for beginners.
Overall the trail is around 4km long with 400m elevation.
There are many amazing viewpoints, great for taking a rest. I recommend carrying food and plenty of water."

Isabella Wagner

"Amazing intermediate hike. Beautiful nature and panoramic views along the way. Some parts of the trail are challenging (steep, large rocks or no metal rope to hold onto at the edge), so maybe not for absolute beginners."
