What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the breathtaking scenery and the iconic suspension bridge, calling it a must-see in the Austrian Alps. The hike is described as challenging but rewarding, with well-maintained trails. However, many note the significant crowds, especially at the bridge, and advise early starts. The need for cash at the hut and for the road toll is also a common point.
"Beautiful trail and amazing sights. It is not an easy hike for beginners like us. Its steep and rocky, so good hiking or trail running shoes are recommended. If you have the time and endurance, take the Neumarkter Runde route down. Follow 502 to the left of Olpererhütte, and then route 535 down next to Unterschrammachbach. It is about 3 km longer than the direct route and adds about 100 m in elevation. The terrain is not easier, but you can experience different sights and vegetation along your way. It took us 8 hours to do the full route including rest stops and waiting for photoshoot at the suspension bridge."

"Amazing hike, lovely experience.
Recommended for an early morning hike.
Getting busy during the day.
No waits at the top as well."

"Well, I know that it’s a lot of hype about this place but it’s really worth it. No matter if you want to make a photo on the bridge or not the hike up there is great. For the one with alpine hiking experience, it’s an easy hike about 1.5-2+ hours, up to how often you stop to take photos on the way. There are really lots of stairs so it’d be like you walk up the stairs for about 1.5 hours. Take a lot of water with you if it’s hot. After about 15 minutes hike, there’ll be no shade at all, so be prepared.
We started early in the morning and it was cloudy and raining at first so the waiting time to take the photo on the bridge was only about 10 minutes.
A very beautiful place. Now I know why, it’s so famous."

The Iconic Suspension Bridge Experience
While the bridge itself is the main draw, the hike to reach it is an integral part of the experience. The trail is well-maintained, with many visitors noting the natural rock stairs that make the ascent manageable, albeit challenging. The journey offers ever-changing perspectives of the alpine landscape, making every step rewarding.
To truly capture the magic of the bridge, timing is crucial. Early mornings or late afternoons can offer softer light and fewer crowds, allowing for more serene moments and better photographic opportunities. Be prepared for potential queues, especially during peak season, as everyone vies for that perfect shot.
Hiking to Olpererhütte: What to Expect
One of the most critical pieces of advice from hikers is to carry ample water. The trail is largely exposed to the sun, with very little shade once you leave the initial treeline. Carrying at least 1.5 liters per person is highly recommended, especially on warmer days.
While the direct route is about 3.3 km with around 587 meters of elevation gain, some hikers opt for longer, more scenic descent routes like the Neumarkter Runde. This adds distance and elevation but allows for exploration of different terrains and views. Regardless of the chosen path, the hike is considered worth the effort for the stunning alpine scenery and the rewarding destination.
Practicalities: Cash, Crowds, and Comfort
Secondly, crowd management is key to enjoying the experience. The suspension bridge, in particular, can become very busy. To avoid long waits for photos and a more peaceful experience, aim for an early morning start or consider visiting on a weekday.
Finally, comfort is paramount. Beyond good hiking shoes and water, consider bringing sun protection like a hat and sunscreen due to the exposed nature of the trail. The mountain weather can also be unpredictable, so packing layers is always a wise decision for a more comfortable and enjoyable hike.
