What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors consistently praise the Jüdisches Museum Hohenems for its deeply informative and professionally curated exhibits on regional Jewish history and the Holocaust. The audio guides are highlighted as excellent, making the German displays accessible. While the subject matter is somber, the museum is commended for its dignity and care in presenting these important stories.
"This museum is an excellent place to learn about the history of the Jewish people in Austria. Not just the tragic story of the last Jews of Hohenems. But also the more broadly, the experience of Austrian Jews from the Middle Ages to the present day, with the main focus being on the Austrian participation in the Holocaust. There are many sad personal records of Jewish people trying to escape the oppression in other parts of Austria, trying to cross the border to the safety of Switzerland and often not making it. The very professionally presented displays are in German, but audio guides are provided in multiple languages, including English. You select the index number on the display and hear the English translations which are very clear and informative. The exhibits are on two floors. We took a break in the nice cafe to rest before going up to the top floor. As we know, the suffering of the Jews was horrific and the story here is very difficult to contemplate. My mother was Austrian and one imagines with great sadness that my forebears somehow participated in the horror. There are inspiring stories of how the Jewish people contributed greatly to local prosperity only for their contributions to be systematically and cruelly wiped out. A history which in our day seems set to repeat. This little museum is unique and very important, attracting visitors from all over the world. Going there is a way to keep the memory of those lost alive, and to remind each of us that we have a personal role to stop it happening again. There is a very good book in the shop which details all the museum exhibits. It is available in English and German editions."
