What are your best “exotic“ or international restaurant and food shopping tipps for vienna? Looking for authentic (fusion is ok, just not “asiawok“style or weird euro-adapted) and affordable-ish :)

"The Ethiopian Restaurant in Vienna offers a warm, cozy escape into one of the world’s most communal and soulful cuisines. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere feels welcoming, intimate, and relaxed — a place where dining is meant to be shared and savored.
The food is authentically prepared and deeply flavorful, served in generous portions that offer excellent value for money. Rich stews, aromatic spices, and the signature injera come together in a satisfying and traditional experience that leaves you both full and content. This is comfort food with character, cooked with respect for heritage rather than adaptation.
The staff are genuinely friendly and attentive, happy to guide guests through the menu and explain unfamiliar dishes — an important detail for those new to Ethiopian cuisine. Their warmth enhances the communal dining spirit that defines the restaurant.
That said, the space would benefit from modernization, particularly in terms of ventilation. After dining, the lingering aromas on clothing are a reminder that a better air system would greatly improve comfort without compromising authenticity.
Overall, Ethiopian Restaurant delivers honest, traditional cooking with outstanding value, making it a highly recommended stop for those seeking bold flavors and a welcoming experience in Vienna."
The Reviewer
"Warm, comforting, wholesome good food. I enjoyed my meal. Went as a large group from work. I was happy that i could order an individual plate of food for myself, and with rice instead of injera, which I find a bit too sour for my taste. The rice option was a good idea, even more so as it came with cutlery. Mine was a mixed plate of a beef dish, a lamb dish, a carrot and beans item, a cabbage item, and potatoes and carrots, a salad and some crumbly cheese. Only the beef was quite hot/spicy, the rest were very mild. All the dishes were tasty in a homely sort of way...not oily or greasy, but rather healthy and matter of fact. I could eat this everyday without guilt.
Ethiopian cuisine is probably as much for the experience (eg. communal eating with hand, from an injera-lined platter) as for the taste itself. So...personally, even though i liked the flavors of all the meat and veg items each on their own, I am not a fan of all of the items being served together on top of an injera-lined platter as it makes that lining soggy and messy and quickly unappealing halfway into the eating. And therefore...I repeat... I opted for and enjoyed my individual rice based plate. I hope that doesn't come across as rude!
Oh, and btw, the place had a strong smell of incense or something which stuck to my clothes and hair. It was ok while we were there, but coming home the scent still lingered and became a bit overwhelming. So everything had to be washed.
Would I go again? Maybe, and I'd again order a separate individual rice-based plate.
Is it worth the money? Yes, it's quite reasonably priced; my mixed-platter was for 13.5 euros, and that was the most expensive plate. On average, a single person would pay 10-12 bucks, without dessert and drinks.
Is it a good place for people set in a certain way of dining? Probably not.
* Finally, I strongly feel it would be nice if the restaurant had provided disinfectant wet tissues or hand sterilisers before the meal. Diners coming to such restaurants where communal platter and eating with hands is expected often forget or don't wash hands prior to eating, often so as not to disturb other diners in the crowded restaurant."

The Art of Ethiopian Dining
While communal platters are the traditional way to dine, the restaurant also offers individual plates. These can be served with rice instead of injera, catering to those who prefer a more conventional dining style or find injera's sourness not to their taste. This flexibility ensures that everyone can enjoy the rich flavors of Ethiopian cooking in a way that suits them best. The staff are often happy to explain the customs and guide newcomers through the experience, making it accessible and enjoyable for all.
Beyond the injera, the flavor profiles are a major draw. Dishes are rich with aromatic spices like berbere (a chili powder blend), cardamom, and fenugreek. Popular choices include Doro Wot (spicy chicken stew), Misir Wot (spicy red lentil stew), and various vegetable-based dishes like Gomen (collard greens) and Tikil Gomen (cabbage and carrots). The vegetarian and vegan options are particularly celebrated for their depth of flavor and satisfying nature.
Atmosphere and Ambiance
Reviewers frequently mention the friendly and attentive staff who contribute significantly to the welcoming feel. They are known for their willingness to explain the menu, offer recommendations, and ensure guests have a pleasant dining experience. This personal touch enhances the overall enjoyment and makes diners feel well-cared for.
However, a point of consideration for some visitors is the ventilation. A few reviews mention that the aromas from the cooking and incense can linger on clothing after the meal. While this is part of the sensory experience for some, those sensitive to strong scents might want to be aware of this aspect. Despite this, the overall consensus is that the cozy atmosphere and genuine hospitality make it a highly recommended spot.
