Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Leopold Museum for its unparalleled collection of Egon Schiele's work and significant Gustav Klimt pieces. The free MQ Libelle rooftop terrace is a major bonus, offering stunning city views. Some find the modern art overwhelming if not specifically interested, and ticket prices can add up for families.

"This exhibition offers a wonderful experience with some truly fascinating pieces. If you have a deep appreciation for Egon Schiele, you'll find joy in exploring his works here."

Anastasia Kapshitskaia

"Absolutely delightful experience! The art museum is curated on 5 different levels of a simple cuboid limestone building and it contains some of the most controversial art pieces of Egon Schiele. A large collection of Gustav Klimt's, Rudolf Wacker's, Moser's and Kokoschka's workings is breathtaking and it will be a treat for all lovers of painting. Sculptures are perfectly matched with the ambient and among them you can see even those made by Ivan Meštrović, Auguste Rodin and Edgar Degas. The seating area in the rooms is a bit limited but if you get tired while you're exploring the museum, there are enough seats in the lobby."

Ivana Obradovic

"So beautiful works.. we could find tickets at the gate even it was saturday. Especially Klimt’s Death and Life piece was precious. I m in love with it"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Egon Schiele

The Leopold Museum is globally recognized for housing the most extensive collection of Egon Schiele's work. Schiele, a protégé of Gustav Klimt, is celebrated for his intense, often raw, self-portraits and expressive figure studies. His distinctive style, characterized by distorted perspectives and stark lines, captures a profound psychological depth. The museum's collection spans his prolific career, offering a comprehensive look at his artistic evolution and his significant contribution to Austrian Expressionism. Visitors often find his work both unsettling and captivating. Instagram

Many visitors are drawn to the museum specifically for Schiele's powerful and emotionally charged pieces. The sheer volume of his work on display allows for a deep dive into his artistic vision and the turbulent era in which he lived. It's an opportunity to understand why he remains such a pivotal figure in 20th-century art. Instagram

Gustav Klimt's Golden Touch

While the Leopold Museum is most famous for Schiele, it also boasts a significant collection of works by Gustav Klimt, a leading figure of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt's art is often associated with his 'Golden Phase,' characterized by opulent use of gold leaf, intricate patterns, and symbolic imagery. His paintings, like those of Schiele, explore themes of love, life, and death with a unique aesthetic. Instagram

Experiencing Klimt's art at the Leopold Museum provides a crucial context for understanding the Viennese art scene of the early 20th century. His influence on younger artists, including Schiele, is undeniable.
