What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Visitors often praise Vienna's stunning architecture, rich history, and efficient public transport. However, some reviews mention issues with air quality due to cigarette smoke in public areas and instances of unhelpful or rude staff at tourist information points. Tours to nearby attractions like Hallstatt have also received mixed feedback regarding excessive stops and local interactions.

"A pervading smell of cigarette smoke everywhere completely ruins any enjoyment of sitting out and experiencing the city.
We stayed in Premier Inn near the train station after the Cz Republic MotoGp arriving late on Sunday night and before travelling back to the UK. We had breakfast and lunch. Very disappointed. It’s almost impossible to breath clean air in places."

Jason Dowle

"If you book a tour to Hallstatt with 7travel, I would recommend doing it either with another or on your own. I did not like that they made us stop so many times in restaurants when if it was for bathroom brake or to buy snacks, we could have stopped at a gas station. In one of the restaurants (that was really expensive) one member of staff was really rude. In Hallstatt, also locals were rude, and keep in mind I was not doing anything wrong. I also did not like that they stopped for petrol during the tour when they could have done that in the 3 hours we had in Hallstatt. Too many stops for such a long trip. We stopped more in the restaurants than in the castle, which was a 15 min stop. Not recommended. The tour guide was nice, that’s the only reason I am giving it 3 stars."

Nuria Mara Rodriguez Moncalvo

"Great very helpful staff. Had the honour to get a tour with them to Hallstatt, Dasha was our guide and she did an amazing job. Well done to her and our coach driver too."

Vienna on a Budget: Maximizing Your Euros

Vienna offers a surprisingly rich experience for budget travelers. Many of its most iconic sights are free to admire from the outside or explore their grounds. The sprawling gardens of Schönbrunn Palace are a prime example, offering hours of exploration without an entry fee. TikTok+1 Similarly, simply wandering through the historic city center, marveling at the architecture of buildings like the Hofburg Palace and the Austrian Parliament, costs nothing. TikTok

To save on transportation, invest in a Vienna public transport pass. The U-Bahn, trams, and buses are incredibly efficient and cover the entire city, making it easy to reach attractions without expensive taxis. TikTok Look for free walking tours, which are a fantastic way to get an overview of the city's history and key landmarks, with the expectation of a tip for the guide. TikTok Many museums also offer free admission on certain days or have free sections, so it's worth checking their schedules. TikTok

When it comes to food, explore local markets like the Naschmarkt for affordable and delicious street food options, or seek out traditional 'Beisln' (small, casual restaurants) for authentic Austrian cuisine at reasonable prices. Avoid the most tourist-heavy areas for dining to find better value. TikTok

Navigating Vienna's Public Transportation System

Vienna's public transportation network is renowned for its efficiency, reliability, and ease of use. The system comprises the U-Bahn (subway), trams, and buses, all integrated under a single ticketing system. This means one ticket or pass allows you to travel on any of these modes within the designated zones. TikTok

When planning your journey, the Wiener Linien app or website is an invaluable tool. It provides real-time schedules, route planning, and service updates. Purchasing tickets can be done at ticket machines located at most U-Bahn stations, online, or via the Wiener Linien mobile app. It's crucial to validate your ticket before boarding or immediately upon entering the platform area, as inspectors frequently check for valid tickets. TikTok

For short stays, consider a 24, 48, or 72-hour pass, which offers unlimited travel and is often more economical than buying single tickets if you plan on moving around frequently. If you're staying longer, a weekly pass might be the best option. Remember that while the system is extensive, some outer districts might require a transfer or a longer journey, so factor this into your travel time. TikTok

A Glimpse into Vienna's Imperial Past

Vienna's identity is deeply intertwined with its imperial past as the capital of the vast Habsburg Empire. This legacy is most evident in its magnificent palaces and grand architecture. Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the emperors, is a sprawling Baroque masterpiece with opulent state rooms and extensive gardens that offer a glimpse into royal life. Reddit Equally impressive is the Hofburg Palace in the city center, a complex that served as the principal imperial palace for centuries and now houses museums, the Spanish Riding School, and the Austrian National Library. TikTok

Beyond the palaces, the imperial influence is visible in the city's layout and many of its cultural institutions. The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History) houses the imperial collections, showcasing masterpieces collected by the Habsburgs over generations. TikTok Even a stroll through the city center reveals grand boulevards like the Ringstrasse, lined with impressive buildings that were constructed during the height of the empire's power and prosperity. TikTok

To truly appreciate Vienna's imperial heritage, consider visiting the Imperial Crypt (Kaisergruft), the burial place of the Habsburg emperors and empresses, or exploring the Austrian National Library, with its breathtaking Baroque State Hall. These sites offer a tangible connection to the dynasty that shaped Vienna and much of Europe for centuries. Reddit
