Reviews Summary

Visitors find Jaintapur Rajbari Ruins to be a historically significant site with unique megalithic remnants, offering a glimpse into the Jaintia Kingdom. However, many note the poor state of preservation and lack of maintenance by authorities, which detracts from its potential as a major heritage destination. The natural beauty of the surroundings is often praised. Reddit

"A historical site that captures the splendor of the Jaintia Kingdom is Jaintia Rajbari, which is situated in Jaintiapur, Sylhet. Despite its charm, the palace's ruins are not well-maintained by the Archaeological Department. This once-majestic edifice is in a degraded state due to overgrown vegetation and improper preservation efforts.
An interesting archeological element is provided by the neighboring megaliths, which are prehistoric stone structures believed to have served ceremonial functions. But they are also overlooked, with nothing being done to preserve or highlight their importance. Due to poor maintenance, the site's potential as a cultural and tourism destination is still neglected despite its picturesque surroundings and rich history. Jaintia Rajbari might become a heritage site that is well-preserved and genuinely commemorates its legacy with the right restoration and maintenance."

"Jaintiapur is the only place where Megalithic remainders have been discovered in Bangladesh. It holds the enduring pieces of the Jaintia Kingdom.🏛️
If people want this kind of Megalithic Monuments they will have to go to Portugal, Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland and Turkey. But it is the only Megalithic Monument in Bangladesh."

"Jaintapur is famous for the ruins of the megalith (huge stone pattern of prehistoric times). Due to the geological structure of the region, it was independent for a long time and was well known as the state of Jaintapur. Thus the region has been mentioned in epics, mythology and Tantric literature. However, information from local legends, folklore and copperplates shows that Jaintapur came under the kingdom of Kamarupa in about 7th / 8th century and later it came under the rule of Chandra and Varman rulers. After the fall of the Varmans, Jaintapur was again ruled by the Dev dynasty for some time. Jayanti was the daughter of Jayant Roy, the last ruler of the Dev dynasty. His daughter was married to Landoar, a son of a Khasi tribal chief. From this marital source the state of Jaintapur came under the rule of Khasias around 1500 AD. The state of Jaintapur was ruled independently by the Khasi kings until it was annexed by the British in 1835."

The Historical Significance of Jaintapur

Jaintapur was once the capital of the Jaintia Kingdom, a powerful entity that extended across parts of present-day India and Bangladesh. The kingdom's influence stretched from the Shillong Plateau into the plains and river valleys. The Jaintia Rajbari Ruins are remnants of this once-majestic royal residence, offering a glimpse into the architectural style and grandeur of the era. The history of Jaintapur is rich, with mentions in epics, mythology, and Tantric literature, reflecting its long-standing cultural importance. Reddit

The region's geological structure allowed it to remain independent for a considerable period. It transitioned through various rulers, including the Kamarupa kingdom, Chandra and Varman rulers, and the Dev dynasty. Notably, around 1500 AD, the state came under the rule of Khasi kings through a marriage alliance, and they ruled independently until the British annexation in 1835.
