What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Semois Valley Trail is a highly scenic and adventurous hike, praised for its challenging terrain, including ladders and fallen trees, and beautiful river views. While some find it less difficult than expected, most agree it offers a good workout and a true nature experience. Navigation requires attention to markers, and it can be demanding for younger children.
"Arrived early, just before 9 on a Saturday morning, when the village was still asleep. Parked the car by the church and started from there. I think I was the first one on the trail that day. Began around 9:15 and got back to the village around 11:20. By then, the place was bustling, and hordes of people were setting off for the hike.
You’re supposed to hike clockwise along the river. You could go counterclockwise from the village, but I’d recommend going with the flow. The trail feels quite intimate: mostly narrow, single-person paths throughout both the descent and ascent.
The ladders can become a problem once it gets crowded, especially with two-way traffic. So, definitely come early, by 10 at the latest. October is when this area is at its most beautiful. Amazingly fun hike overall. Before leaving Rochehaut, make sure to catch the Frahan viewpoint."

"Love these type of hikes! The obstacles (ladders, rocks, stairs) make it so much more fun and challenging and some trees lay/grow over the path which really enhance the feeling of a real nature walk."

Navigating the Semois Valley Trail
Pro Tip: Download an offline map of the area on your smartphone before you go. Apps like AllTrails or Komoot can be invaluable for staying oriented, even if you lose cell service. Many hikers recommend having a physical map as a backup.
Beyond the numbered signs, the natural landscape itself can be a guide. The trail often follows the contours of the Semois River, providing a constant reference point. However, the significant elevation changes and dense forest can sometimes obscure these views, reinforcing the importance of the trail markers.
Understanding the Trail's Challenge
One of the most distinctive features are the ladders and metal railings that assist in navigating particularly steep or difficult sections. While these are helpful, they contribute to the trail's adventurous feel and can be a point of excitement for many hikers. Some reviewers mention that while the dangers are pointed out, they are often less severe in reality, but this can depend on individual fitness and experience levels.
For those considering bringing children, it's important to assess their stamina and comfort with heights and challenging terrain. While some families manage, others find it too demanding for younger hikers. Sturdy hiking boots are a must, and packing plenty of water and snacks is advisable as facilities are limited along the route.
