"We've visited the Christmas Truce Memorial twice in the last three years, first in September 2022 and again this October, 2025.
There isn't alot to see and the memorial is quite small, perhaps a more substantial memorial and maybe a visitor centre perhaps might be more fitting, especially when the events of Christmas 1914 are some of the most talked about of the Great War.
There's only a small memorial, a small information board, a sign and a piece of open ground lying between two trenches, looking down over the adjacent farmland and woods. Very quiet and peaceful.
The actual memorial itself is quite fitting, installed in 2014 it symbolised the 100 year anniversary. The wooden frame and tatty footballs are a less 'attractive' feature, the balls tatty, punctured and falling apart.
The ground in between the two trenches, if accurate, shows what little space there was between the Germans and British.
I suppose like many hundreds and thousands who have visited the spot, I wonder why the politicians, governments and senior officers on all sides of the battlefield and across Europe didn't learn from what the soldiers on the frontline did that day, and how the preceding four years changed so much for so many.
