The church is surrounded by Brouwersstraat, Sint-Catharinastraat, and Sint-Rosastraat. St. Catherine's Church occupies the center of the Tongeren beguinage.
The basilica consists of a three-aisled nave with six bays, a one-bay choir under a slate gable roof, and a pear spire at the crossing. There are sacristies on both the north and south sides of the church. The nave and choir are the oldest parts of the church; these early Gothic sections are built of flint. The aisles, made of marlstone and with bluestone overlays, were added in the mid-14th century. Expansions and renovations were carried out in the 15th, 18th, and 20th centuries."
