Reviews Summary

Tamshing Lhakhang is lauded as one of Bhutan's most precious Buddhist jewels, celebrated for its ancient, original murals and the unique spiritual practice of wearing Pema Lingpa's iron chain. Visitors find the monastery deeply significant and the surrounding village charming, offering a grounded and memorable experience.

"Tamshing Lhakhang was one of the next stops on our walking loop through Bumthang’s temples. The short path from Kurjey Lhakhang led us across a peaceful suspension bridge and open fields. The temple complex felt quiet and grounded, with monks going about their day and a few dogs sleeping in the sun.

Founded by the great spiritual master Pema Lingpa in the 16th century, it’s one of the most important Nyingma temples in Bhutan. One unique feature here is a heavy iron chain made by Pema Lingpa himself, which visitors can carry on their shoulders while walking around the temple as a form of spiritual purification. I"

"One of the most precious Buddhist jewels of Bhutan is Tamzhing Lhakhang in Bumthang.

Bhutan Scenic Tours made it an unforgettable experience due to their connections and wonderful organisation.

Tamzhing is one of the oldest temples of Bhutan and probably the oldest Nyingma temple in the world - considering that all walls and paintings are the originals from the 16th and 17th.
The TertonKing Pema Lingpa established his seat in 1501 and died 1521 here.

The statue of Guru Rinpoche was made by him in 'collaberation' with Dakinis. The special feature of this statue is the up-looking eyes - there are many legends around this appearance but it is also considered as a sign for the Mahamudra/ Dzogchen state of the mind.

Looking onto murals of Karmapa and Shamarpa completed the visit also on a more personal level.
One could spend hours just looking at these murals.

The main fun, however, is the 25kg heavy chain cloak, manufactured by Pema Lingpa. Don't forget to give it a try to wear it.
We loved it there so much!"

"What a remarkable experience at Tamzhing Lhakhang! The ancient mural paintings, steeped in centuries of history, created a truly unique atmosphere. The tale behind Guru Rinpoche and the captivating image of Pema Lingpa added layers of depth to the visit. Shared this blessed moment with 18 loved ones in the charming Tamshing village."
