What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors often praise the Catedral Metropolitana de Natal for its beautiful and unique modernist architecture, finding the interior art, especially the Stations of the Cross, to be very moving. The basement chapel consecrated by Pope John Paul II is a significant draw. However, some find the minimalist style less inspiring compared to traditional cathedrals.
"Very beautiful church and a must see while you’re in the area. This church reminds of other great cathedrals in Brazil. It is magnificent inside and has lots of beautiful art inside including at all its chapels. I especially enjoyed the stations of the cross. Walk around the back of the main altar to find a staircase that goes down below the church to find the gift shop and a chapel that was consecrated by Pope John Paul II with beautiful artwork."
Miguel S.
"Beautiful new cathedral in modernist style. Free drinking water and bargains. The chapel in the basement was opened by Pope John Paul II.
The image of Nossa Senhora da Apresentação found in the 1700, now the patroness of the city, is on display inside."
Josiah Wadsack
"Why, I wonder, when they build a new church these days, do they make it so plain and ugly? I realize that labor and materials were less expensive in the old days, but the parishioners were not affluent. They still managed to put up beautiful churches for the glory of God. These new churches, instead of lifting the mind and heart to God, oppress the spirit."
