What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Dois Rios Beach is lauded for its stunning natural beauty, unique river-meets-ocean swimming, and relative seclusion, making the challenging hike worthwhile for many. Visitors appreciate the historical intrigue of the abandoned prison and the tranquility of the long, clean shoreline. However, the arduous journey and limited amenities, particularly the expensive and potentially unsafe boat return, are common drawbacks.
"One of the top Beaches on The island. The way to there it’s gonna take you around 2hs from Abrão. Medium level: not hard but long. But the effort worth it. Beach with just a few visitors. Two rivers on the side where you can swim, make it especial and different than others beaches. Landscape is stunning. Don’t miss the visit to the old prission to learn about history of Ilha Grande. Just one restaurant on the village, so bring your owner food and water. You can find a taxi boat to come back to abrão for 150reals. 😱
✅ Local tip: once you coming back to Abrão 45min to arrive to Abrão you have a view point of Abrão Village, is at the “death Curve” look at the right you gonna find a path downside in to the forest. It gonna take you to “Rua das Flores” at the middle of the town, and save you like 30min walking. Don’t take it if is rain because could be moody and slippery. Enjoy it!"

"I can't get enough of this place.
It is a heaven where some people lived their hell, but today's day its a full of history, stories, nature and local culture.
It takes a short 6-7k hike to get here from Vila do Abraão and around 2 hours. It worth all efforts."

"Beautiful beach. About 2 hours walk from the town. Add some time so you can see the natural river pool nearby the road. It was easier to see the sign on the way home"

For those seeking a quicker or less strenuous option, hiring a boat is possible, particularly for the return journey. However, this comes at a higher cost, with reports of prices around 150 reais. Some visitors have also expressed concerns about the safety and driving style of certain boat operators, advising caution. Ultimately, the choice between hiking and a boat depends on your fitness level, budget, and time constraints, with the hike offering a more immersive experience of Ilha Grande's natural beauty.
History and Atmosphere of the Abandoned Prison
The juxtaposition of the tranquil beach and the imposing, decaying prison creates a unique and thought-provoking atmosphere. It’s a reminder of the island's multifaceted history, moving from a place of confinement to a destination of natural escape. While not a typical tourist attraction, the prison is a point of interest for those who appreciate historical exploration alongside their beach visits.
The Unique Dual Swim Experience
The rivers also contribute to the beach's name, 'Dois Rios' meaning 'Two Rivers.' This natural phenomenon adds to the secluded and pristine feel of the location. It's a perfect spot to cool off after a long hike or simply to enjoy the diverse natural elements that Ilha Grande has to offer.
