Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Engenho dos Erasmos for its fascinating history and the excellent, informative guided tours. Many highlight the site's importance as a preserved piece of Brazilian heritage and its peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere. It's considered a valuable and enriching experience for anyone interested in colonial Brazil.

"In our opinion, Engenho dos Erasmos is a very interesting, wonderful and different place. The tour guides explained very well its amazing history.
Engenho dos Erasmos are the ruins of ancient sugar mills. In the past it received sugarcane via the São Jorge river. This mill was constantly attacked by pirates and corsairs who tried to steal its sugar for the commercial value it had. The sugar was so important, that its price was compared to the value of gold, so only the rich had sugar at that time, and now it is a common good. The poor people used to paint their teeth black to be more accepted by society, because the people that ate sugar, probably would have tooth cavities.
This place stopped manufacturing sugar because of the sugar crisis. When the farm was abandoned, at about the XVIII century, the residents near the farm got some rocks from the archaeological site to build their houses.
Nowadays it is a perfect place to take whoever would want to study archeological evidences about Brazilian history. It is not so crowded and the location is incredible. Engenho São José dos Erasmos is considered heritage by IPHAN, CONDEPASA and CONDEPHAAT, because it is very important for the history of Santos, São Paulo and Brazil."
