What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the Fortaleza de Santa Cruz da Barra for its breathtaking panoramic views of Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay, and its significant historical importance as the oldest military site in the Americas. The affordable entry fee and convenient bus access are also highlighted as major positives. However, some reviewers note issues with inconsistent opening hours, poor management affecting facilities, and the fact that guided tours are only in Portuguese, which can be a barrier for non-speakers.
"Very beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro, the bay and Niteroi. Of course, one can also see the ocean and the beautiful coastline.
There is now a guided tour so be prepared to wait half an hour or more before you start.
The public bus can drop you off and pick you up there, which is super convenient.
Unfortunately the tour is only in Portuguese, but its a very interesting fort and friendly tour guide soldier.
The fort is however a little dilapidated."

"10 reals to enter! It includes a guide. I had a Portuguese guide so I didn't understand much! It felt long! You can take pictures everywhere. You can't touch or stand in certain places which felt annoying at times. Not spectacular but decent! They can improve on lots of things!"
Antoine Assaad
"Beautiful spot to contemplate nature and feel the wind! There is also a military fortress and a coffee shop there. No need to pay the entry unless you are visiting the fortress."
