What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Gruta do Acaia offers a truly unique and beautiful experience with its glowing waters, but it's not for everyone. Visitors praise the mesmerizing natural phenomenon and the secluded subterranean beach. However, the challenging, narrow passages can be a significant deterrent for those with claustrophobia, and some report issues with access and local interactions.
"Beautiful and unique experience with glowing water inside the cave — but if you’re claustrophobic, you might want to think twice before going."
Oumaima Qasmi
"It is a long, moderately difficult walk from Praia Vermelha. Trail is good but has about 400m of total elevation, and the heat and humidity make it hard.
We asked at the pousada we stayed at as well as at the dive centre, and both assured us it was an easy walk and free. So we took limited stuff and no cash.
Lies!
We were chased by a local brandishing a rake! Even before we reached the grotto.
There was also a long line of people waiting to enter (they have seemingly arrived by boat)
It might be a unique experience, but the difficulty in getting there, the long line to enter, and the claustrophobic nature of the cave as well as getting harrassed by a local and the unhelpful rude guides make the experience not worthwhile."

"Unique experience, but not for everyone. The way down is very very narrow, and completely dark. Good way to find out whether one is claustrophobic. But when you sit there and watch this emerald green glow with the wave sounds, makes it totally worth it.
Make sure you try the coconut from Dona Claudete on the way out (first house to the right). The tastiest coconut water I've ever had. And if you speak Portuguese, ask about the history of her family."
