"Alter do Chão é uma vila turística com belas praias de areias brancas, banhadas pelas águas transparentes do rio Tapajós, fica localizada a 32 km de Santarém e é conhecida mundialmente por seus mais diversos atrativos, contudo, seu maior patrimônio material é a Igreja matriz de Nossa Senhora da Saúde, construída no final do século XIX em estilo barroco colonial português.
A igreja de Nossa Senhora da Saúde de Alter do Chão, fica localizada na praça 7 de setembro e foi a terceira igreja ser construída na vila, o altar foi esculpido em estilo rococó em madeira de lei em 1925 e a imagem de Nossa Senhora da Saúde datada de 1725, foi um presente dos missionários portugueses.
O prédio da Igreja inclui a capela central e duas naves laterais, sendo que a capela possui 25 metros de comprimento e 7,97 metros de largura, a espessura das paredes chega a 40 centímetros e na parte superior, encontra-se o espaço para o coro e duas portas originais em madeira, com sacadas que têm como vista a praça principal da vila.
No lado esquerdo, uma das portas dá acesso à nave que abriga o sino de bronze que pesa 60 Kg, o prédio atual possui 146 anos de existência, porém, se acrescentarmos o tempo decorrido entre a primeira ermida, construída em 1738, ao templo ora restaurado, já passam de 276 anos, a devoção dos Alterenses a sua padroeira.
Em 21 de junho de 2009 a Igreja foi reconhecida como “Patrimônio Histórico de Santarém”."
