What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Jericoacoara National Park is celebrated for its stunning natural beauty, particularly its iconic dunes and vibrant sunsets, making it a paradise for watersports enthusiasts. While the sandy terrain and relaxed village atmosphere are highlights, some visitors find the journey challenging and the beaches less spectacular than anticipated, with occasional issues like seaweed.
"Nice protected national park with beautiful dunes and sunsets. Very sandy, like sand everywhere.
Also nice to jog as many people did.
Dog friendly."

"I am glad I went but I would not return. Getting there is a hassle. We hired a car from Fortaleza, then had to get a 4x4 into the park. You can fly to the nearby airport so that may be a better option. The dunes are beautiful but much reduced in size over recent years. The town is not unpleasant but a total tourist place. I prefer quieter places with less people. The beaches are not nearly as nice as the ones near me in Sao Paulo - hard sand and no shade anywhere. There was a lot of washed up rotting seaweed which was smelly and the water had zero visibility, maybe just the wrong time of the year. Lots of cars, buggies and motor bikes constantly racing around everywhere. It's a literal tourist trap as it is impossible to escape unless you take a 40 minutes bouncy ride back to Jeri, which is in effect leaving. It's really hard to self-cater because the local shops are very limited in what they have and are expensive. This must have once been a hauntingly beautiful place, but not anymore and would not make it into a top 50 list of places to visit in Brazil."
Paul Davis
"Nice beach place but the beach isn't anything spectacular in my eyes. Low tide takes the water out a long way, high tide leaves a small beach & shallow water. Loads of kite surfers & a few surfers (small waves from what I've seen). The night time comes alive with restaurants & drink vendors, this makes Jeri more attractive...but everything closes at 1am :)"

The Unique Transportation Challenge
Once in Jericoacoara, the village itself is best explored on foot, as its streets are made of sand. For excursions to the stunning lagoons and dunes that surround the area, buggy tours are the most popular and practical option. These can range from shared group tours to private excursions, offering flexibility in exploring sights like Lagoa do Paraíso and the famous Sunset Dune.
While some may consider renting a car, it's crucial to understand that a standard vehicle will not suffice for the sandy tracks. If you choose to drive from Fortaleza, you will need to arrange for a 4x4 vehicle for the latter part of the journey. This unique transportation system is part of what makes Jericoacoara feel so remote and special.
Embracing the Sandy Environment
This sandy environment also means that activities like jogging and walking are popular ways to experience the natural beauty. Many visitors enjoy leisurely strolls along the beach or more vigorous runs on the firm sand. However, it's important to be prepared for the elements; carrying plenty of water is essential due to the strong sun and the dehydrating effect of the sand.
While the sand contributes to Jericoacoara's unique charm, it can also be a challenge. Some reviews mention the presence of seaweed on the beaches, which can be smelly and affect the water's appearance, suggesting that the time of year might influence the beach experience.
The Jericoacoara Vibe: Relaxation and Nightlife
As the sun sets, Jericoacoara truly comes alive. The nightlife is a significant draw, with numerous restaurants, bars, and drink vendors creating a vibrant atmosphere. This makes the evenings a highlight for many, offering a chance to socialize and enjoy local flavors.
However, it's worth noting that Jericoacoara is a tourist-focused destination. While beautiful, some visitors find it can feel like a 'tourist trap' due to its popularity and the constant presence of activity. For those seeking quieter, less commercialized spots, it might not be the ideal choice.
