Conheci essa agradável ilha nos idos de 1.984, bem assim como as demais localidades adjacentes, a exemplo do Catelão, ilha do Baixio, furo do Paracuúba,, ilhas da Maria Antônia, do Jacurutu, do Muratu, da Paciência, Curari, boa do Janauacá, costa da Araunã, etc.
Mas, voltando à ilha da Marchantaria, esse foi o lugar aonde o famoso saxofonista TEIXEIRA DE MANAUS nasceu, viveu, foi e criado e se desenvolveu como profissional. Diga-se profissional dos bem adestrado pela disciplina, ainda que isso importunasse os vizinho, estando o mais próximo a uns cem metros em linha reta.
A ilha tem esse nome porque, por falta de abatedouro regular na cidade de Manaus, era para os compradores de gado do médio e baixo rio Amazonas levavam os bois para serem abatidos e encaminhados para venda nas feiras e mercados de Manaus.
Retomando a imagem do grande saxofonista TEIXEIRA DE MANAUS, este, ainda menino, todos os dias, após o trabalho e as refeições, às 12:30 horas e às 19:30 horas, treinava o sopro, no primeiro treino, o da sesta, ia até às 14:00 horas e, no segundo, o da janta, estendia-se até às 22:00 horas ou mais, cujo som estridente do saxofone era ouvido até à costa do Xiborena.
Com o tempo, aproximadamente cinco (5) anos de treinos, todos se acostumaram e não reclamavam mais. De repente, o menino TEIXEIRA sumiu. Passaram-se uns três (3) anos e, no outro de repente, eis que volta à ilha o famoso TEIXEIREA DE MANAUS, fama com a qual percorreu o Brasil animando as noitadas dos românticos.
A ilha já era apenas um ponto da beleza natural desse imensa rio Amazonas, por isto não perdeu a cobiça do mundo.
